    About :

In this video I introduce the Opposite-Leaved Golden Saxifrage (Chrysosplenium Oppositifolium) – an edible plant which grows at the end of winter, when there is little other edible wild food available. This is the second plant I have found growing while winter is still lasting, after the Snowdrops (introduced in an earlier video).

I tried eating saxifrage before, and even though I didn’t mind the taste, I didn’t care much for the texture. I compare it in the video to the Porcelain Fungus (Oudemansiella Mucida) – an edible mushroom which I have eaten but likewise didn’t care for the texture.

Saxifrage can be a lifesaver if you find yourself in a survival situation in the season where there are few, if any other options available. Thus it’s a useful plant to get to know. It likes shady and moist areas and if you find one where saxifrage grows, there’s typically a whole mat of them.

The ones featured in the video are an early grow, whereby the plants are still small. When they mature, they grow flowers without petals, which look pretty much like the rest of the plant, but re slightly lighter green in color.

While introducing the Saxifrage, I also came across a few fruiting bodies of the Artist’s Conk (Ganoderma Applanatum) bracket fungus – a medicinal mushroom from the same family as Reishi.
