Beautiful Austria: an Awesome Alpine Cabin Trip

This summer I traveled to the Austrian Alpes to explore some of the beautiful lakes and views!

Part of this trip was a cabin tour in the Kreuzeck mountain group in the province of Carinthia. The hike we planned was three days and included two overnight stays at two alpine cabins.

On the first day we hiked up from Oberdrauburg, a small town in the valley at the foot of the Kreuzeck group. The weather was quite grey in the morning and we even had some rain here and there. The views were quite stunning though:

This first day was an 11km hike up to the Huge-Gerbers hut. This is a cabin managed by the Alpine Verein and provides food and beds for hikers. It was a real pleasure to stay at after a long day of hiking.

I had booked two beds before we left. The staff was super nice and they fed us with good mountain food and plenty of drinks.

Later in the evening, the staff informed us about their dog attacking a lam of a herd of sheep. It turned out that the little lam was laying in the same place the whole evening. Right before dark they ended up checking the lam. Luckily it was unharmed and the next day it managed to reunite with the herd. Here you can see the staff looking at the lam in the far distance.

After a solid breakfast at the Hugo-Gerbers Hutte we started the second hike to the Feldner-Hutte. The weather cleared up and we were excited to start and enjoy some amazing views

This again was a full day of hiking. The route was mostly over ridges with steep drops on both sides. In the middle of the hike we passed Hochkreuz. The highest peak of this mountain group at 2709 meters altitude. The views were awesome!

After reaching the peak, it was time to head toward the next cabin:

After a good day of hiking we found the Feldner hutte tucked in between a lake and some hills:

This hut was a bit more equipped than the last one. It had running water :P

Here we met some lovely people and a very kind warmhearted ward. We ended up playing games until the wee hours while enjoying some local Larch schnaps. Awesome!

The next day after breakfast we hiked down a meadow along a river. Truly beautiful! This day it was also quite hot. With the river right there, we couldn't help but to do some skinny dipping in the river filled with cold melting water!

After another full day of hiking we ended up in a town called Greifenburg. From here, we walked to the train station the train took us back to the starting point were we had parked the car.

As a pre-measure, we booked a nice hotel nearby to freshen up with a shower and a cold beer.

All in all a wonderful little trip during our stay in Austria.
