Hello Ladies and Gentlemen! Welcome to my entry for the Music Zone Song Challenge Phase 3! My name is Jasper Dick, and I am singing to you from Cape Town in South Africa!

Now, the whole point of this challenge is that I need to present a brand-new original song that I have never played in public (or uploaded online to places like Hive, Facebook or YouTube) before!

This is the last day of the Phase 3 Window being open, so if I don’t come up with an idea and present a first draft, I will completely miss out!

What I have been noticing with creativity, is that it is often easier to be creative when you try and limit yourself in some way. This basically creates some rules for the creativity game and focuses you…

I discovered this when I set myself the challenge of playing a new musical instrument to add flavour to my Hive Music Festival entries for about 20 weeks. Usually, I was such an absolute beginner at the new instrument that I found I could only do one or two things when I played it, and it would sometimes lead me into exactly the melody or chord structure of a cover that I could actually pull off!

Now I often play guitar in DADGAD tuning instead of the standard EADGBE tuning, but with DADGAD you still need to place one finger on the fretboard to strum the root chord. Another even more popular tuning that I haven’t tried often is a full open D-major chord where the guitar is tuned DAD(F#)AD… Now when I play the root chord of the song, I don’t have to use my left hand at all… which gives the left hand even more opportunity to be playing a high-pitched melody line instead.

So, I tried that… and immediately a riff came to me… and then it wasn’t long at all before I had a phrase or two in mind to sing in honour of my wife Julia, and what a wonderful mother she is being to my 2-year-old daughter Madison, no matter how tired or even sick she gets!

I think I’m a pretty good, loving, father so far, but I do know that if I do a half day of “daddy duty” to give poor Julia a break, then I’m pretty tired by the end of it – I just can’t imagine how exhausting it must be to be a full-time parent! I don’t think the full-time mothers in the world get nearly enough credit!

What should we call this song? I’m just calling this first draft “Mother’s Love” for now! Please comment your ideas?
