Retro Music week 1 / Cover "House of the Rising Sun (Trad / The Animals)" by @jasperdick (ENG/ESP)

Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Music Community! My name is @jasperdick and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town, South Africa!

This is Week 1 of the “Retro Music” challenge! The aim of the game is to play a cover of anything from the 1920s to the 1990s, anything that would be considered a bit “Retro” in this day and age, which opens up a world of possibilities!

The song that I’d like to tackle is “House of the Rising Sun”. Now the version we all know and love was released by the Animals in 1964 here:

But they didn’t write it! If you watch the “No Direction Home” documentary about Bob Dylan, it is revealed that they were covering a Bob Dylan version released in 1962.

But he didn’t write it either! He was copying Dave Van Ronk’s arrangement of the song that he had witnessed Van Ronk playing at a live venue, and then recorded it in 1962 before Dave Van Ronk had the chance!

So, it is actually Dave Van Ronk that we should credit for the modern chord structure and rhythm that the song is played to…

But even Dave Van Ronk didn’t write the lyrics. Before that, the same lyrics, more or less, were sung in a different, more croony arrangement, and it is basically considered a “traditional” song because nobody really knows who originally wrote it as far as I am aware!

¡Hola a todos en Hive y especialmente a la comunidad musical de Hive! ¡Mi nombre es @jasperdick y les escribo (y canto) desde Ciudad del Cabo, Sudáfrica!

¡Esta es la semana 1 del desafío "Música retro"! El objetivo del juego es jugar una versión de cualquier cosa, desde la década de 1920 hasta la década de 1990, cualquier cosa que se considere un poco "retro" en esta época, ¡lo que abre un mundo de posibilidades!

La canción que me gustaría abordar es "House of the Rising Sun". Ahora, la versión que todos conocemos y amamos fue lanzada por Animals en 1964 aquí:

¡Pero no lo escribieron! Si miras el documental "No Direction Home" sobre Bob Dylan, se revela que estaban cubriendo una versión de Bob Dylan lanzada en 1962.

¡Pero tampoco lo escribió! ¡Estaba copiando el arreglo de Dave Van Ronk de la canción que había visto tocar a Van Ronk en un lugar en vivo, y luego la grabó en 1962 antes de que Dave Van Ronk tuviera la oportunidad!

Entonces, en realidad es a Dave Van Ronk a quien debemos dar crédito por la estructura moderna de acordes y el ritmo con el que se toca la canción...
