HIVE OPEN MIC #185 (ENG/ESP): Passion - "Blind Willie McTell" by Bob Dylan

Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you Cape Town in South Africa!

Welcome to Week 185 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge. The theme for this week is “Passion”!

For those of you who don’t know, I’ve decided to alter my Three Tune Tuesday posts to be based around the Hive Open Mic theme of the week, and how I would go about tackling it. If you are wanting to take part this week, but need some help interpreting what kind of songs would suit the theme, please go check out my post here:

In that post, I suggested three cover songs that would suit the theme well, and you’re welcome to borrow any of the ideas if you still want to take part in the Hive Open Mic this week!

The suggestions were:

• “Trouble” by Ray Lamontagne
• “Mother” by John Lennon
• “Blind Willie McTell” by Bob Dylan

All three of the songs above are sung with 100% passion and commitment by their artists, but it is the last song on the list, “Blind Willie McTell”, that has special memories for me. This is quite an obscure song that not many people know, even Bob Dylan fans, but my father had the Bootleg Series it features on in our music collection when I was growing up.

To this day, my father still has it as one of the covers he requests the most from me, and I think it was because he could see his shy and nervous son (me!) using the song to learn to sing with power and passion. At first, I thought I was going to mainly focus on guitar – and this was one of the songs that taught me that I love singing (and eventually even song-writing) as well and to keep pushing the emotional content and passion in my performance, despite my real shyness and insecurity.

Even Bob Dylan might not be known for his “pretty” voice – but it is songs like this that showed that he knew how to use the voice he had to convey emotion and paint the picture he wanted… I think this song might be some of his best singing ever.

Las tres canciones anteriores son cantadas con 100% pasión y compromiso por sus artistas, pero es la última canción de la lista, “Blind Willie McTell”, la que tiene recuerdos especiales para mí. Esta es una canción bastante oscura que no mucha gente conoce, ni siquiera los fanáticos de Bob Dylan, pero mi padre tenía la serie Bootleg que aparece en nuestra colección de música cuando yo era niño.

A día de hoy mi padre todavía la tiene como uno de los covers que más me pide, y creo que fue porque pudo ver a su tímido y nervioso hijo (¡yo!) usando la canción para aprender a cantar con poder y pasión. . Al principio, pensé que me iba a centrar principalmente en la guitarra, y esta fue una de las canciones que me enseñó que también me encanta cantar (y eventualmente incluso escribir canciones) y a seguir impulsando el contenido emocional y la pasión en mi interpretación. , a pesar de mi verdadera timidez e inseguridad.

Incluso Bob Dylan podría no ser conocido por su “bonita” voz, pero son canciones como ésta las que demostraron que sabía cómo usar la voz que tenía para transmitir emociones y pintar el cuadro que quería… Creo que esta canción podría ser una de su mejor canto de todos los tiempos.
