HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 56 Second Round (ENG-ESP): "Wonderwall" by Oasis

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 56 / Round 2 of the Hive Music Festival!

Last week I shifted a bit away from some of the older classic cover songs I have been doing like “Moondance” by Van Morrison, “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen and songs by Simon &Garfunkel, and instead transported myself back to my youth in the 1990’s by attempting to cover “Under the Bridge” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. However, there are so many wonderful songs from the 1990’s from artists like Oasis, Silverchair, Nirvana, Alannis Morrisette and Tracy Chapman, that I think I should dedicate at least this 3-week cycle to the 1990’s! (Or more? Who wants more?)

One of the songs from the 1990’s that everybody who plays acoustic guitar seems to learn (once they are ready for it) is “Wonderwall” by Oasis! I can hear you groan – this is a song that is played all the time… (and it’s not like it was the only good song Oasis ever wrote! Hahaha!)

But let’s talk about it – as much as many people learn this song along the way on their guitar journey, there are some fundamental things about it that make it a bit more of an intermediate guitar song than a beginner song – but these same fundamental things are what allows the song to sound so recognizable, even when you’re playing it alone with one acoustic guitar. This can be a really satisfying experience for a guitarist – when you can feel like you really are bringing across the energy and sound of a song all by yourself.

• The strumming pattern is a bit more complicated than the beginner patterns. I remember it with the phrase “I want to play like Jimi Hendrix and-a I want to play like Jimi Hendrix and-a” to approximate the rhythm of the up and down strokes!
• Potentially a new concept for beginner guitarists is changing chords in the middle of the strumming pattern rather than at the end…
• Finally my favourite thing about wonderwall – although the top bass 4 strings are dedicated to changing the chords, the bottom two treble strings are stuck on D and G notes throughout. This makes it almost sound like you are playing chords and creating a wall of sound at the same time as if there are two string instruments instead of one, and this concept is often one of the main points of why open-tunings sound so full and beautiful – but it’s great to learn this concept of “pedalling” strings in standard tuning.

So, as much as we’ve heard this song a million times, that’s actually quite a lot it taught me in one go back when I first learnt it! Here is the original version, but let me give it a shot as well!

Finally, here’s a lovely joke I heard about the song: “My wife asked me could I please stop practicing ‘Wonderwall’ on the guitar… I said ‘Maybe’…”

La semana pasada me alejé un poco de algunos de los covers clásicos más antiguos que he estado haciendo, como “Moondance” de Van Morrison, “Hallelujah” de Leonard Cohen y canciones de Simon & Garfunkel, y en lugar de eso me transporté a mi juventud en los años 1990. intentando hacer un cover de “Under the Bridge” de los Red Hot Chili Peppers.
