HIVE OPEN MIC #195 (ENG/ESP): Amistad/Friendship -"How to Save a Life" by The Fray

Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa!

Welcome to Week 195 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge. The theme for this week is “Amistad”, which means “Friendship” in English!

For those of you who don’t know, I’ve decided to alter my Three Tune Tuesday posts to be based around the Hive Open Mic theme of the week, and how I would go about tackling it. If you are wanting to take part this week, but need some help interpreting what kind of songs would suit the theme, please go check out my post here:

In the post above, I made three recommendations for songs that would suit the theme:

• “Thank You for Being a Friend” by Andrew Gold
• “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” by Randy Newman
• “How to Save a Life” by The Fray

Of those three, let me try “How to Save a Life” by the Fray. This is a wonderful, emotional song with an iconic chorus that goes “Where did I go wrong? I lost a friend…” To me, it describes that helpless feeling that you get when a friend or loved one is battling addiction or suicidal depression, and nothing you do seems to help…

I’ve learnt the hard way that you can’t save people who aren’t ready to try and save themselves… You need to be a place of listening support, where the person basically works out their own shadows and negative patterns through speaking to you once they’re ready… rather than offering advice that usually doesn’t land before they’re ready to hear it… This is a really hard thing to accept as you watch someone go downhill…

En la publicación anterior, hice tres recomendaciones de canciones que se adaptarían al tema:

De esos tres, permítanme probar “Cómo salvar una vida” de Fray. Esta es una canción maravillosa y emotiva con un estribillo icónico que dice “¿Dónde me equivoqué? Perdí a un amigo…” Para mí, describe ese sentimiento de impotencia que tienes cuando un amigo o un ser querido está luchando contra una adicción o una depresión suicida, y nada de lo que haces parece ayudar…

He aprendido por las malas que no se puede salvar a personas que no están preparadas para intentar salvarse a sí mismas... Es necesario ser un lugar de apoyo y escucha, donde la persona básicamente resuelve sus propias sombras y patrones negativos hablando con él. una vez que estén listos... en lugar de ofrecer consejos que generalmente no llegan antes de que estén listos para escucharlo... Esto es algo realmente difícil de aceptar cuando ves a alguien ir cuesta abajo...
