HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 61 First Round (ENG-ESP): "All Along the Watchtower" Bob Dylan/Jimi Hendrix

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you a small coastal village in the Garden Route about 7 hours from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 61 / Round 1 of the Hive Music Festival! It’s beautiful outside, so let me sing near the outside fireplace while my baby daughter has a nap!

(Oh, the neighbours in the next holiday house seemed to enjoy the performance! Hahaha! About 20 minutes later I had to chase away some monkeys who had stolen some of our bananas! Cheeky!)

Today I would like to try and do an acoustic cover of “All Along the Watchtower”. It was originally written by Bob Dylan, and it has a very distinctive riff where you count out your strums 1-2-3-4… 1… 1-2-3…1-2. Okay, that looks pretty funny written out like that, but it is very recognisable as a rock-and-roll standard when you hear it!

Does that not ring a bell? Perhaps that’s because the most famous, electrified version of the song is by Jimi Hendrix. His version of the song adds a whole lot of energy and the kind of electric guitar solos that established Jimi Hendrix as one of the best guitarists in the world.

As much as the lyrics paint some imagery in my mind, I have absolutely no idea what the song is about or trying to say – and so I just use it as a canvas for self-expression! I have tried googling the song on Wikipedia, and as far as I can tell, nobody else seems to know what the song is about either although there are some theories about Biblical text, or a combination of folk story telling by Woody Guthrie and early blues by Robert Johnson. Well, it comes out sounding like the foundations of rock-and-roll!

Perhaps I should make this three-week cycle about early rock-and-roll music from about the 1960s? I think that would be fun!
