Una celebración extendida en todo el territorio venezolano es la de los Reyes Magos. Cada seis de enero se conmemora el día en que los Magos llegados de Oriente llevaron regalos al Niño Jesús.

En la zona donde vivo, al Norte de Maracay, la tradición de celebrar el día de Reyes se remonta a los mismos orígenes de la comunidad. Diversas cofradías han ido recibiendo el testigo para darle continuidad a una celebración que se extiende por generaciones. Es común ver en estas procesiones integrantes de los mismos grupos familiares, desde abuelos hasta bisnietos, todos por igual comparten el amor por mantener viva la celebración.

La base organizativa para la celebración de Reyes recae en La Parranda del Castaño, un grupo musical encargado de amenizar las diferentes celebraciones que según la tradición corresponden a cada fecha del año. Participan por ejemplo, el día de San Juan y en el de Santa Bárbara.

Una fuerte influencia Afro descendiente predomina en la base rítmica y los diferentes cánticos que se van entonando en la procesión, esto es una muestra del sincretismo cultural que caracteriza a las fiestas religiosas en Venezuela.

El componente Afro descendiente se deriva de la herencia cultural de los primeros pobladores de la zona. La mayoría de las familias fundadoras eran gentes procedentes de la costa de Aragua, de gran tradición Afro descendiente.

Deciden establecerse en este sitio por ser la puerta de salida y entrada hacia la población de Choroní. Aún en la actualidad es común que los lugareños no se trasladen hasta el terminar central de Maracay para usar el transporte colectivo que los lleve a la costa, sino que lo esperan en la vía principal cercana a la localidad, de igual modo en los viajes de retorno los buses hacen parada para los que viven en el sector.

Los preparativos para la celebración comienzan el último trimestre del año anterior. Los integrantes de la Cofradía se dan a la tarea de gestionar la logística necesaria. La mayor parte de los recursos se obtienen mediante donaciones de los vecinos y de los comerciantes del sector. Con esos ingresos se reponen los instrumentos musicales, se confecciona el vestuario para los voluntarios a ser Reyes, y se adquieren las golosinas y regalos que se dejan a los menores.

La procesión amenizada por la Parranda va recorriendo las diferentes calles de la comunidad y de los sectores vecinos, en las casas donde hay espacio suficiente pasan un momento a compartir algunos cánticos con los vecinos.

Esta celebración se mantiene de forma espontánea por el simple deseo de mantener vivas las raíces de la cultura de los ancestros, ha sobrevivido a muchos cambios culturales y ha resistido intervenciones de diferentes tipos.

Es admirable que en estos tiempos de desenfreno tecnológico y quiebre de los modos de vida tradicionales, haya jóvenes que se entusiasmen por darle continuidad a la herencia cultural de sus abuelos.
