    ENGLISH

    Demeter

Demeter is one of the older sisters of Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. One of the most important goddesses of Olympus and that the mythology around her is loaded with symbols and metaphors that if we stop a little to look with a little attention we discover incredible things.

Goddess as mother of nature and agriculture, she is responsible for the harvests and to her is attributed the seasons of the year, for me, this myth is one of the most emotional around the goddess that accompanies us today. Demeter and Zeus have a daughter named Persephone, eventually this goddess is kidnapped by her uncle Hades and takes her with him to the underworld. Demeter despairs and her sadness is such that she forgets her work and all vegetation on earth begins to die. Humans begin to complain in their prayers and Zeus, faced with such chaos on earth, goes to his sister to ask her to return to do her work.

Demeter tells Zeus that she will not heed his words until she has her daughter with her. Zeus summons his son Hermes to go to the underworld and convince Hades, but he does not agree so easily to Zeus' wishes. In the end, after a deception, he manages to get Persephone to spend 6 months with him in the underworld every year. Thus giving Demeter a roller coaster of emotions that respond to the seasons of the year.

Autumn and winter represent the time in which Persephone spends in the underworld and Demeter is left sad on Olympus. Spring represents the joy of the goddess who is reunited with her daughter, and summer represents the goddess's discomfort at knowing that she will have to be separated from her daughter for 6 months.

This myth is a wonderful example of how the ancient world was linked with the world, with the real, as explained, that which lacked an explanation must be something of the gods. I hope you liked this episode, see you in a next installment.
