Abril Azúl: Día Mundial de la Concienciación sobre el Autismo

Amelie nos escogió como su familia y eso es maravilloso. La gente a veces la ve y se extraña porque ella me abraza, me toca, se sienta sobre mí y se preguntan, cómo es posible, ya que Amelie es autista. Bueno, la respuesta es fácil: un diagnóstico, no es un pronóstico, así que decidimos que el afecto fuera parte de su vida y ella lo acepta y da a su manera.

¿Qué es el autismo? Nunca he definido ese concepto en mi blog, creo que es como preguntar: ¿Qué es una persona blanca o Morena?, es parte de lo que son. Y la sociedad se ha llenado por años diciendo que TODOS los seres humanos somos diferentes, pero cuando ven a un niño o persona autista, que también son diferentes, entonces le llaman a ellos "especiales o enfermos", cuando el Autismo no es una enfermedad, ni es algo que se deja a un lado, porque un grupo no tolere que se definan con ese nombre.

Amelie chose us as her family and that is wonderful. People sometimes see her and miss her because she hugs me, touches me, sits on me and they wonder, how is that possible, as Amelie is autistic. Well, the answer is easy: a diagnosis is not a prognosis, so we decided to make affection part of her life and she accepts it and gives it in her own way.

What is autism? I have never defined that concept in my blog, I think it's like asking: What is a white or brown person, it's part of who they are. And society has been filled for years saying that ALL human beings are different, but when they see a child or autistic person, who are also different, then they call them "special or sick", when Autism is not a disease, nor is it something that is put aside, because a group does not tolerate being defined by that name.

Amelie nos enseñó que se puede amar de muchas maneras, que la paciencia no tiene límites y que cada día se pierde un poco de ella, pero se añade otro poco también. Nos enseñó que la empatía no se da a quien de apariencias la necesita, si no a todos, incluso al payaso mientras sonríe buscando sacarnos también una sonrisa. Nos ha enseñado que la rutina no es mala, si no necesaria y que también es genial salir de ella de vez en cuando.

Nos ha enseñado que los logros no se miden por pequeños o grandes, que tiene la misma emoción dar un paso por primera vez que correr miles de kilómetros. Nos ha enseñado a escuchar el silencio y hablar a través de la mirada. Que el amor no se dice, porque la manera perfecta es demostrarlo, darlo y hacer saber que realmente existe. Que el autismo no es cuestión de uno, si no de todos los que lo rodean. Que debemos ser el doble de fuertes ante los prejuicios, pero que tampoco hay que callarnos y aceptar que otros sean quienes nos definan o juzguen por lo que no viven en nuestra propia piel.

Amelie taught us that you can love in many ways, that patience has no limits and that every day you lose a little bit of it, but you add a little bit more. She taught us that empathy is not given to those who apparently need it, but to everyone, even to the clown who smiles and tries to make us smile too. It has taught us that routine is not bad, if not necessary, and that it is also great to get out of it from time to time.

It has taught us that achievements are not measured in small or big things, that taking a step for the first time is as exciting as running thousands of kilometres. She has taught us to listen to silence and to speak through our eyes. That love is not said, because the perfect way is to show it, to give it and to let people know that it really exists. That autism is not a matter of one, but of all those who surround him/her. That we must be twice as strong in front of prejudices, but that we must not be silent and accept that others are the ones who define us or judge us for what they do not live in our own skin.

Amelie nos ha enseñado que no es difícil vivir con Autismo, que lo realmente difícil es enfrentarsena sociedad, que le teme a lo que es diferente.
