We're back on the stage for week 59, round 2 of the Hive Music Festival. Today, I'm picking up the theme of Gaitas with another type. This genre is very popular as protest, festive and adoration songs. The one I brought this time is of the latter type and it's been played since the 60s.

Stories say this song was composed late at night in a restaurant and written on a napkin. That alone gives it a certain mystery and mystical essence. I'm talking about Reina Morena, a collaboration between Jairo Gil and Ricardo Aguirre. The second name here is a very important one for the whole genre of Gaita. He's been dubbed "El Monumental" and the date of his demise is marked as the day as the Day of "El Gaitero" (name to refer to anyone who makes a living out of this kind of music).

The song is one of the many composed in the name of the Virgin of Chiquinquirá (one of the advocation of Virgin Mary). Legends say the image of this virgin appeared on a piece of wood and said relic is kept in a big church in Maracaibo. Also, this virgin is the patron of Colombia where her image dates back the 16th century. The piece moves along a chorus and verses that are repeated until the song is complete. The difficult part in this genre as usual is keeping up with the rhythm. Playing it on soloist Venezuelan Cuatro is quite a challenge. But here goes my attempt!

Volvemos para la semana 59, ronda 2 del Hive Music Festival. Hoy continúo con el tema de las Gaitas con otro tipo. Este género tiene canciones de protesta, celebración y adoración. En este caso, voy por el último. Les traje una canción que ha sonado desde los años 60.

Las historias dicen que se compuso una noche en un restaurant y que fue escrita en una servilleta. Eso le da un aura de misticismo a la pieza. Sus compositores, Jairo Gil y Ricardo Aguirre son figuras importantes en el mundo de la gaita. Este último es conocido como "El Monumental" y la fecha de su partida se marca como "El Día del Gaitero". Honor que le fue conferido por sus aportes al género de la Gaita.

Esta canción es una de las muchas que han sido creadas en honor a la Virgen de Chiquinquirá. La leyenda dice que la imagen de esta virgen apareció en una tablita que se conserva en una basílica en Maracaibo. Los orígenes de esta advocación de la Virgen María vienen de Colombia durante el siglo XVI. De hecho, esta es la patrona de este país vecino. La pieza tiene dos momentos marcados entre un coro y sus estrofas que se repiten varias veces hasta el final. Esta estructura sencilla es fácil desde el punto de vista armónico y melódico. El ritmo es lo que se complica al querer intenpretarla en cuatro solista. ¡Pero aquí vamos con el intento!
