Natural monument - Saint Wolfgang's oak near Regensburg

This summer my wife and I drove to Passau and left the highway near Regensburg to have a look at an impressive natural monument. The so-called "Saint Wolfgang's Oak". A real guardian of time. In 2021 the trunk circumference of the tree was measured with 9,80m and the height with approx. 18m with a realistic age of 500-600 years. By the way, on the sign next to the tree an age of 1200 years is given, which is certainly not true, but it just fits the name of the tree "Saint Wolfgang's Oak". This Saint Wolfgang lived about 1000 years ago. Thus this oak had to be made just also a few years older than it really is. At least the basic facts should fit completely after the current slogan "the truth is our most precious property, let us economically, with it deal".

What impresses me most, besides the dimension and age of the tree, is that this tree is hollow inside. The cavity of the tree is so big that 5-6 fully grown people can fit into the tree without any problems. You can also look outside from the inside through former large branch holes. From the outside these branch holes look like big eyes, which give the tree its own character of a head.

Despite this fact, the tree looks alive and boasts a full canopy of leaves. Here you can see very well that the main supply of the tree is through the bark, and for this it is not necessarily necessary to have a full trunk.
In the end, I still found the ear of the tree and told him a few things about me, which I hope can now live on for a few more centuries in the tree😉.

In the end, one recognizes here once again, one's own transience in relation to the magnificence of nature and how such a guardian of time can arise from a small acorn.

Naturdenkmal – Sankt Wolfgangs-Eiche bei Regensburg

Diesen Sommer sind meine Frau und ich nach Passau gefahren und bei Regensburg kurz mal von der Autobahn abgefahren, um uns eines beeindruckendes Naturdenkmal anzuschauen. Die sogenannte „Sankt Wolfgangs-Eiche“. Ein wirklicher Hüter der Zeit. 2021 wurde der Stammumfang des Baumes mit 9,80m und die Höhe mit ca. 18m gemessen mit einem realistischen Alter von 500-600 Jahren. Übrigens, auf dem Schild neben dem Baum ist ein Alter von 1200 Jahren angegeben, welches mit Sicherheit nicht stimmt, aber es passt halt zum Namen des Baumes „Sankt Wolfgangs-Eiche“. Dieser Heilige Wolfgang lebte vor ca. 1000 Jahren. Somit musste diese Eiche halt auch ein paar Jahre älter gemacht werden als sie wirklich ist. Zumindest sollte die grundsätzlichen Fakten passen ganz nach dem aktuellen Motto „Die Wahrheit ist unser kostbarstes Gut, lass uns sparsam, damit umgehen“.

Was mich am meisten beeindruckt, ist neben der Dimension und des Alters des Baumes, dass dieser Baum innen hohl ist. Die Höhlung des Baumes ist so groß, dass 5-6 ausgewachsen Menschen ohne Probleme in den Baum passen. Man kann auch von innen durch ehemalige große Astlöcher nach außen schauen. Von außen wirken diese Astlöcher wie große Augen, die dem Baum einen eigenen Charakter eines Kopfes verleihen.
Trotz dieses Faktes sieht der Baum lebendig aus und prahlt mit einem vollem Blätterdach. Hier erkennt man sehr gut, dass die Hauptversorgung des Baumes durch die Rinde erfolgt und dazu nicht unbedingt ein vollständiger Baumstamm notwendig ist.
Am Ende habe ich noch das Ohr des Baumes gefunden und ihm ein paar Dinge von mir erzählt, die wie ich hoffe, nun noch einige Jahrhunderte im Baum weiterleben können😉

Letztendlich erkennt man hier wieder einmal, die eigene Vergänglichkeit in Bezug auf die Großartigkeit der Natur und wie aus einer kleinen Eichel so ein Hüter der Zeit entstehen kann.
