Greetings to this beautiful music-loving community. I am communicating from the small city of Villa de Cura in the Aragua state in Venezuela. Today I want to share with you a traditional Venezuelan song titled "The North is a Chimera". I will perform it playing the accordion.

My instrument

The accordion is not a very well-known instrument, it is "infrequently" used despite the beauty of its sound. In fact, I am learning to play it self-taught since in my town no one teaches accordion classes. There are several models of accordion. Mine is diatonic. It does not have black keys, therefore, it does not have accidentals (sharps #/ flats b). This makes it difficult for me when playing since I have to transpose the songs to C Major or A minor and there are pieces that even in those cases require accidental alterations and I can no longer interpret them. For example, in this piece you will notice a sound that differs from the original melody in the 7th measure. There would be an F# that I must replace with an F natural.

The Song
"The North is a Chimera" It is the classic Caracas merengue, was composed by Luis Fragachán, upon his return from New York and became fashionable in Caracas in 1928. In the song he reflected his experience when he went to the North to look for a better horizon and found an experience very different from the expected. With irony he treats the case of those who return from the North presuming to have had important jobs and remain silent about having had to dedicate themselves to very humble activities. I share with you the version popularized by "Los Antaños del Stadium", a Venezuelan musical group founded in Caracas by Jacobo Espinoza in 1946 under the name Los Cañoneros del Estadium.

In primary school I once had to dance this piece at a cultural event wearing the style of the time: straw hat, long-sleeved shirt, elastic bands. I remember my dad - may he rest in peace - made my hat. My mom managed to improvise the elastics for me and we were left with this photo to remember.

Saludos a esta bella comunidad amante de la música. Me comunico desde la pequeña ciudad de Villa de Cura en el estado Aragua en Venezuela.

Quiero compartir hoy con ustedes una canción tradicional venezolana titulada "El Norte es una Quimera". La interpretaré tocando el acordeón.

Mi instrumento

El acordeón no es un instrumento muy conocido, es de uso "poco frecuente" a pesar de la belleza de su sonido. De hecho, estoy aprendiendo a tocarlo en forma autodidacta ya que en mí localidad nadie da clases de acordeón.

Hay varios modelos de acordeón. El mío es diatónico. No tiene teclas negras, por ello, no tiene las alteraciones (sostenidos #/ bemoles b). Esto me complica a la hora de tocar ya que debo transportar las canciones a Do Mayor o La menor y hay piezas que aún en esos casos necesitan alteraciones accidentales y ya no las puedo interpretar.
Por ejemplo, en esta pieza notarán un sonido que difiere de la melodía original en el 7mo compás. Allí iría un fa# que debo sustituir por un fa natural.

La Canción

"El Norte es una Quimera" Es el clásico merengue caraqueño, lo compuso Luis Fragachán,a su regreso de Nueva York y se puso de moda en la Caracas de 1928. En la canción reflejó su vivencia al irse al Norte a buscar un horizonte mejor y encontrarse con una experiencia muy distinta a la esperada. Con ironía trata el caso de quienes vuelven del Norte presumiendo haber tenido trabajos importantes y silencian el haber tenido que dedicarse a actividades muy humildes.

Comparto con ustedes la versión popularizada por "Los Antaños del Stadium" agrupación musical venezolana fundada en Caracas por Jacobo Espinoza en 1946 bajo el nombre Los cañoneros del Estadium.

En primaria me tocó una vez en un acto cultural bailar esta pieza con la vestimenta a la usanza de la época: sombrero de pajilla, camisa manga larga, elásticas. Recuerdo que mi papá - que en paz descanse - me hizo el sombrero. Mi mamá se las arregló para improvisarme las elásticas y nos quedó está foto para el recuerdo.
