Rehearsal for a Caracas show || Ensayo para un show caraqueño - Nikol y Hely

Despite the fact that when cañonera music was born it was an essentially masculine genre -because it was not well perceived socially- the two most important groups dedicated to this musical genre in the country, one with 76 years of existence, Los Antaños del Estadium, and the other about to celebrate 41 years of activity, Los Cañoneros, have had a woman as the main soloist voice.

The singer of the oldest group is the daughter of the founder of the group, Jacobo Espinoza. She is Nikol Espinoza.

From the second group, the singer is the sister of the leader of the group, that is, my sister. She is Hely Orsini (@helyorsini).

Although both groups have shared the stage on many occasions, there has never been a show where the two of them were the main stars.

It was Hely's idea to organize a show in which both would participate, and that the accompaniment would not correspond to the sound of either group, but rather to seek a traditional sound, but one that would be different from both works.

However, she decided that the musicians should be members of both groups.

So last Sunday we decided to have a first rehearsal where we would give shape to the repertoire, but not with written arrangements, nor with pre-established sounds, but the result would come from what emerged from improvisation and the discussions that arose.

It was a very interesting challenge for all of us, because although we had collaborated with each other before, this was the first time we had to find a balance in sound and arrangements.

Of course, with everyone's experience, the work was easy and fun, and more than a rehearsal, it became a celebration of our Caracas music.

If you are going to be in Caracas on that date, you should take advantage of it and come and listen to the two female voices of cañonera music singing to our capital.

A pesar de que cuando nació la música cañonera era un género fundamentalmente masculino -pues no estaba bien visto socialmente- las dos agrupaciones, dedicadas a este género musical, más importantes del país, una con 76 años de existencia, Los Antaños del Estadium, y la otra ya a punto de cumplir 41 años de actividad, Los Cañoneros, han tenido como voces solistas principales, a una mujer.

De la agrupación más antigua, la cantante es hija del fundador del grupo, Jacobo Espinoza. Ella es Nikol Espinoza.

De la segunda agrupación, la cantante es hermana del director del grupo, es decir, hermana mía. Ella es Hely Orsini (@helyorsini).

Aunque en muchas oportunidades ambas agrupaciones han compartido la tarima, nunca se había planteado un show donde ellas dos fueran las estrellas principales.

Fue idea de Hely organizar un espectáculo en el que participen las dos y que el acompañamiento no se corresponda con el del sonido de alguno de los dos grupos, sino buscar un sonido tradicional, pero que se diferencie de ambos trabajos.

Sin embargo, decidió que los músicos fueran de los integrantes de dichos grupos.

Así se planteó el domingo pasado hacer un primer ensayo donde le daríamos forma al repertorio, pero no con arreglos escritos, ni sonidos preestablecidos, sino que el resultado viniera de lo que surgiera de la improvisación y las discusiones que se plantearan.

Para todos ha sido un reto muy interesante, pues aunque habíamos hecho colaboraciones, unos con los otros, por primera vez debíamos buscar un equilibrio en el sonido y los arreglos.

Claro está, con la experiencia de todos, el trabajo resultó fácil y agradable y más que un ensayo, se convirtió en una celebración por nuestra música caraqueña.
