We should note that an expanse is a space. Gen. 1:7 states that God made the firmament and separated the waters which were under the firmament from the waters above.

In verse 8, he called that firmament heaven. So, a heaven means a space. We see there's a heaven in both in verse 1 and 8. We can see that the space between the ground and sky is a heaven. But, there are other heavens.

Gen. 1:9 further points out that God caused the waters under this heaven to be gathered unto one place so that the dry land appeared which he called the earth. The gathered waters he called seas in verse 10.

In Cor. 12:2 we are made to understand there are three heavens according to the vision reported by Saint Paul. A correlation of this is 1Kings 8:27 which refers to "heaven of heavens" which cannot even contain God.
