Hello friends! I am very happy to be here with you. The song that I play today "Mèlodie Antique Française" is a work belonging to Opus 39 by the Russian composer Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky or Tchaikovsky (1840-1893).

¡Hola amigos! Estoy muy contento de poder estar aquí con ustedes. La canción que hoy interpreto "Mèlodie Antique Française", es una obra perteneciente al Opus 39 del compositor ruso Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky o Chaikovski (1840-1893).

  The theme of this 160th edition of the Open Mic, “Fraternity”, invited me to set my eyes on the sweet melody that I am playing for you today, its title and its melancholy made me think of the old French motto «Liberty, Equality, Fraternity» . The French Revolution (where the motto comes from) was a beacon that radiated light to many libertarian movements in Latin America, especially, it influenced the thought of great Venezuelans such as Francisco de Miranda and Simón Bolívar, among other illustrious heroes.

El tema de esta edición 160 del Open Mic, “Fraternity”, me invitó a poner mis ojos en la dulce melodía que hoy toco para ustedes,su título y su melancolía me hicieron pensar en el viejo lema francés «Libertad, Igualdad, Fraternidad». La revolución francesa (de donde surge el lema) fue un faro que irradió luz a muchos movimientos libertarios de la América Latina, en especial, influenció el pensamiento de grandes venezolanos como Francisco de Miranda y Simón Bolívar, entre otros ilustres próceres.

  But, going back to the old French motto, does that ideal of freedom, equality and fraternity reign in our current societies? Sure things have improved since the French Revolution but there is still much to do.

Pero, volviendo al viejo lema francés, ¿reina en nuestras sociedades actuales aquel ideal de libertad, igualdad y fraternidad? De seguro han mejorado las cosas desde la Revolución Francesa pero aun queda mucho por hacer.

  Why choose a piece in a minor key to represent brotherhood? Fraternity leads us to be supportive, empathetic and respectful of other people. Unfortunately, fraternity is a value that languishes in our time, the desire for success, the competitive and highly individualistic nature of our societies, war... makes fraternity one of the great pending subjects. The irony of all this is that she would make our human experience truly human, that is, full of love, peace and happiness. How beautiful will be that longed-for world where all human beings love each other as brothers, then brotherhood will never again be evoked with a lesser tone.

¿Por qué escoger una obra en tonalidad menor para representar la fraternidad? La fraternidad nos lleva a ser solidarios, empáticos y respetuosos con las demás personas. Lamentablemente la fraternidad es un valor que languidece en nuestro tiempo, el afán de éxito, el carácter competitivo y altamente individualista de nuestras sociedades, la guerra... hace que la fraternidad sea una de las grandes asignaturas pendientes. Lo irónico de todo esto es que ella haría nuestra experiencia humana verdaderamente humana, es decir, llena de amor, de paz y felicidad. Que hermoso será ese mundo anhelado donde todos los seres humanos se amen como hermanos, entonces nunca más la fraternidad será evocada con un tono menor.
