El Diablo Suelto | Heraclio Hernandez by Miguel Vargas

El Diablo Suelto (The Devil is Loose) is a Venezuelan waltz created by the Zulian composer Heraclio Fernandez. Despite being a waltz, it is traditionally performed almost like a joropo (at a higher BPM), this because the piece was used by the performers of the time to demonstrate virtuosity and absolute control over their instrument.

For the flute this is an important piece in the folk repertoire. Due to the fact that the piece lends itself to demonstrate speed and good technique, it has become a kind of standard among flutists. So much so, that one of them, Omar Acosta, created a beautiful arrangement for two flutes, the same arrangement you will hear next. In addition to the arrangement, I have added with the help of two great friends a Venezuelan cuatro and a bass.

El Diablo Suelto es un vals venezolano creado por el compositor zuliano Heraclio Fernandez. A pesar de ser un vals, tradicionalmente se ejecuta casi como un joropo (a un BPM mayor), esto debido a que la pieza era usada por los intérpretes de la época para demostrar virtuosismo y control absoluto sobre su instrumento.

Para la flauta esta es una pieza importante en el repertorio folklórico. Debido a lo mucho que se presta la obra para demostrar velocidad y buena técnica, se ha vuelto una especie de estandar entre Flautistas. Tanto así, que uno de ellos, Omar Acosta, creó un hermoso arreglo para dos flautas, el mismo arreglo que escucharán acontinuación. Sumado al arreglo, he agregado con la ayuda de dos grandes amigos un bajo y un cuatro venezolano.
