Argentina - Walking along Las Grutas beach: a unique and special place 😃❣️.

When my friend Sofía and I planned to take advantage of those cheap flights to the province of Chubut, we had not thought that we would also end up in the province of Río Negro. And it is that when you are traveling and excited to discover new beautiful places, any distance seems short, everything seems like a good plan and since you are out there, it is better to do it because if not now, when? Those were all the questions that were presented to us when deciding that since we were in that area of ​​the country, we had to make a little getaway to the famous Las Grutas beach ❣️.

Cuando mi amiga Sofía y yo planeamos aprovechar esos vuelo baratos a la provincia de Chubut, no habíamos pensado en que también terminaríamos en la provincia de Río Negro. Y es que cuando estas de viaje y emocionado por conocer nuevos lugares hermosos cualquier distancia parece corta, todo te parece buen plan y ya que estas por ahí, mejor hacerlo porque ¿si no es ahora, cuándo? Esas fueron todas las cuestiones que se nos presentaron a la hora de decidir que ya que estábamos en esa área del país, teníamos que hacernos una pequeña escapada hasta la tan famosa playa de Las Grutas ❣️.

Honestly, we weren't that close: more than 300 km separated us from this beach, but everyone had made it such a good name that they convinced us that we had to go. We had already planned a fairly precise itinerary in terms of what we had to do, so as soon as we got off the plane, we bought bus tickets and went there. The day we arrived it was already a bit late and we could only see a bit of the beach from above, which hadn't seemed so great at the time, but we gave the next day 😃.

Honestamente no estábamos tan cerca: nos separaban más de 300 km de esta playa pero es que todos le habían hecho tanta buena fama que nos convencieron de que teníamos que ir. Ya habíamos planeado un itinerario bastante preciso en cuanto a lo que teníamos que hacer, así que ni bien bajamos del avión, compramos pasajes de micro y fuimos. El día que llegamos ya era un poco tarde y solo pudimos apreciar un poco de la playa desde arriba, la cuál no nos había parecido tan genial en ese momento, pero le dimos otra oportunidad al día siguiente 😃.

It was March and autumn had started a few days ago, but luckily we had a nice hot day. We had said that we would go early to see the beach, but between the tiredness we had from the long trip the day before and the lazy waking up, we ended up going almost at noon. Upon arrival, we noticed a completely different landscape than what we had seen the day before 💞.

Era Marzo y el otoño había empezado hacía unos cuantos días, pero por suerte tuvimos un buen día de calor. Habíamos dicho que iríamos temprano a ver la playa, pero entre el cansancio que teníamos por el largo viaje del día anterior y la fiaca al despertar terminamos yendo casi al mediodía. Al llegar, notamos un paisaje completamente diferente al que habíamos visto el día anterior 💞.

For start, there was a beach and you could see the sand - all of this stretched for over 2 blocks. You had to walk quite a bit to get to the water and we joked that a taxi would not hurt to take you to the shore. This surprised us because the day before the water was almost at street level, which meant that in less than a day the water had receded all that distance. Very rare indeed 😵.

Para empezar, había una playa y se podía ver el arena: todo esto se extendía por más de 2 cuadras. Había que caminar bastante hasta llegar al agua y bromeamos con que no vendría nada mal un taxi que te lleve hasta la orilla. Esto nos sorprendió porque el día anterior el agua estaba casi al nivel de la calle, lo que significaba que en menos de un día el agua había retrocedido toda esa distancia. Muy raro en verdad 😵.

This is how the same beach looked the previous afternoon, with no place to go down to the shore. From 6 PM until the next morning, the water dropped more than 200 meters, incredible 🤗.

Así se veía la misma playa la tarde anterior, sin lugar para bajar a la orilla. Desde las 6 PM hasta la mañana siguiente, el agua bajó más de 200 metros, increíble 🤗.

After walking for a while, finally we were able to see the caves themselves. For those who don't know, like me at the time, a grotto is a cavity formed in the ground, in this case it was naturally caused by the water in this up and down movement every day. Until then I wasn't surprised because it looked like any conventional beach to me, but that's when I said "wooow" 😅.

Después de caminar un rato, finalmente pudimos ver las grutas propiamente dichas. Para aquellos que no sepan, como yo en ese momento, una gruta es una cavidad formada en la tierra, en este caso fue de manera natural por el agua en este movimiento de subida y bajada todos los días. Hasta entonces no estaba sorprendida porque me estaba pareciendo como cualquier playa convencional, pero ahí fue cuando dije "wooow" 😅.

What I found interesting is that the street is built almost on top of the caves and there are multi-story buildings: I suppose that all this must be monitored due to the constant risk of collapse. What we had seen the day before is that on the waterfront street, parallel to the sea, it is forbidden to drive heavy vehicles, only bicycles are allowed. This is to avoid constant movement on the ground, and after seeing the caves below we understood why ⭐️.

Lo que me pareció interesante es que casi encima de las grutas está construida la calle y hay edificios de varios pisos: supongo que todo esto debe estar monitoreado por el riesgo de derrumbe que hay constantemente. Lo que sí habíamos visto el día anterior es que en la calle de la costanera, paralela al mar, está prohibido circular con vehículos pesados, solo se permiten bicicletas. Esto es para evitar el movimiento constante en el suelo, y luego de ver las grutas debajo entendimos por qué era ⭐️.

Another thing I liked was the ground: it looked weird, full of algae and rocky in places. I thought about the millions of years it would have taken for the land to erode in this way, and it also gave me a little panic to think that this part was covered in water the day before. And of course we wondered at what time the water would rise again and cover the caves, because at the moment everything looked normal 😅. If you are wondering the scientific explanation for the abrupt rise of the water, well, I can tell you that of course it is because of the moon and its effect on the tides. This entire area located in the Gulf of San Matías is quite flat, so a slight movement is enough to flood the entire beach and originate the two very different landscapes that are seen daily. Another great work of amazing nature ❣️.

Otra cosa que me gustó era el suelo: se veía raro, lleno de algas y rocoso por partes. Pensé en los millones de años que habrá tardado el terreno en erosionarse de esta forma, y también me dió un poco de pánico pensar en que esta parte estaba cubierta de agua el día anterior. Y por supuesto nos preguntábamos a qué hora iba a volver a subir el agua y tapar las cuevas, porque por el momento todo se veía normal 😅. Si se estan preguntando la explicación científica de la subida tan abrupta del agua, bueno, puedo decirles que por supuesto es por la luna y su efecto en las mareas. Toda esta zona ubicada en el Golfo de San Matías es bastante plana, por lo que un leve movimiento es suficiente para inundar toda la playa y originar los dos paisajes tan diferentes que se ven a diario. Otra gran obra de la asombrosa naturaleza ❣️.

Las Grutas beach in Río Negro is considered one of the most beautiful in Argentina. My opinion is... controversial. I found it beautiful and I liked the combination of caves, beach and water that goes up and down in great levels in a matter of hours. But I had already seen a similar landscape when I went to The Cliffs of Mar del Plata, in Buenos Aires, so I was not so surprised. Something they told us is that in the summer the water is warm, almost lukewarm, which could add a point in favor to this beach, since the sea in other parts of the country is always frozen. Is this an excuse to come back for summer? Maybe.

La playa de Las Grutas en Río Negro es considerada una de las más lindas de Argentina. Mi opinión es... controversial. Me pareció linda y me gustó la combinación de cuevas, playa y agua que sube y baja en grandes niveles en cuestión de horas. Pero yo ya había visto un paisaje similar cuando fui a Los Acantilados de Mar del Plata, en Buenos Aires, así que no me soprendí tanto. Algo que nos dijeron es que en el verano el agua es cálida casi tibia, lo que podría añadir un punto a favor a esta playa, ya que el mar en otros puntos del país siempre es congelado. ¿Es esto una excusa para volver el verano? Quizás.

If you ask me if it was worth traveling the extra 5 hours to get there, my answer is yes. I always like to see new and amazing places and to be able to say "I was there". And we were still missing the second half of the day, which is when we saw with our own eyes the rise of the water, but we will see that in the next post 😅.

Si me preguntan si valió la pena viajar 5 horas extras para llegar hasta allí, mi respuesta es sí. Siempre me gusta conocer lugares nuevos e increíbles y tener la posibilidad de decir "estuve allí". Y aún nos faltaba la segunda mitad del día que es cuando vimos con nuestro propios ojos la subida del agua, pero eso lo veremos en la siguiente entrega 😅.
