When I first heard Nathaniel Bassey's gospel song "Olorun Agbaye" (God of the Universe), I was very moved.
Although I could not understand a word of Yoruba, listening to the music made me deeply feel the power of worship.
The choir's beautiful praise songs and the combination of instruments gave me a sense of uplift. It was almost hypnotic.
This song gave me a sense of calm and peace during my stressful days.
It was as if I could feel God's presence closer, that I could reach out and feel His love surrounding me.
Other African gospel songs also gave me this feeling.
I especially like the repetition of phrases and the swapping of lines between the different singers.
It's a rhythm that makes you want to move your body and participate.
Words, even in languages I don't know, help me focus on God.
When I've been through some tough times lately, listening to this song gives me courage.
Before you know it, you'll be humming the melody for hours.
The majestic sound lifts my spirits to overcome everyday fears and frustrations.
Most problems will pass, but God will remind you that He remains steadfast forever.
I believe that this kind of music is one of God's special gifts.
We humans have probably been praising God with songs since time immemorial.
Words, harmony, and rhythm work together in important ways that go beyond the power of words alone.
They create space for Spirit to rise and reconnect with the Creator.
Next time you need encouragement, listen to the powerful hope of Bassey's "Olorun Agbaye" and join your voices in praising our wonderful God.
Boost your posture and refresh your energy so you can continue to shine brightly.
