HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 48 Third Round (ENG-ESP): "Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes" / Paul Simon

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 43 / Round 3 of the Hive Music Festival!

After first doing my original songs (Weeks 1-22), and then challenging myself to play a wacky new instrument every week (Weeks 23-42), I had started to base my Hive Music Festival entries (Weeks 43-47) on duets with my good friend @clairemobey. Me like to call our duo “MobeyDick”!

Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to see Claire this week. We played a lovely gig on the weekend, and have a bit of a break until organising more, I have had quite a bad bout of flu (lots of people are sick in Cape Town at the moment) and Claire has been very busy as well!

So, I hope you’ll forgive me if I sing you a song by myself this week? I would like to do a cover of a Paul Simon song called “Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes”. It is from his “Graceland” album that he made by visiting South Africa during the last years of Apartheid and working with wonderful SA musicians including a fabulous choir called Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Please be sure to watch the original video so you can hear the magic that the choir could produce… as well as my cover attempt!

The irony is that Paul Simon received some criticism for coming to South Africa in the late 1980s. Towards the end of Apartheid (a political system where racial segregation was enforced by law to the benefit of the white minority), most artists (and athletes) had agreed to boycott South Africa and not perform or record here. Nevertheless, the “Graceland” album is regarded as one of the best albums of all time and is especially loved by South Africans as it shined a light on our political situation. In addition, it revealed some of our special musical flavour and talents to the world! So looking back, we all think Paul Simon made the right decision to come here and work with our talent, and especially the talent he chose… and that it did much more good than bad in the end!

Hola a todos en HIVE, y especialmente a la comunidad Music Zone. ¡Mi nombre es Jasper y les escribo (y canto) desde Ciudad del Cabo en Sudáfrica! ¡Bienvenidos a la Semana 43/Ronda 3 del Hive Music Festival!

Después de hacer primero mis canciones originales (semanas 1 a 22) y luego desafiarme a tocar un instrumento nuevo y extravagante cada semana (semanas 23 a 42), comencé a basar mis entradas en el Hive Music Festival (semanas 43 a 47) en duetos. con mi buena amiga @clairemobey. ¡Me gusta llamar a nuestro dúo “MobeyDick”!

Desafortunadamente, no he tenido la oportunidad de ver a Claire esta semana. Hicimos un concierto encantador el fin de semana y tuvimos un pequeño descanso hasta que organicemos más.
