HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 72 Third Round (ENG-ESP): "Born This Way" - Lady Gaga!

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 72 / Round 3 of the Hive Music Festival!

Let’s continue my new theme for my Hive Music Festival entries:

Sometimes as musicians we tend to take ourselves a little bit too seriously. I definitely remember doing this when I first started playing Open Mic nights and pubs when I was a younger man. Sometimes it’s important to remember that it’s okay to just have fun with our music!

One of the ways that I like to do this is to take a cheesy pop song and try and cover it on solo acoustic guitar. Will the song still be catchy and recognisable in its bare-bones form due to its chord structure, melody and hooks? Sometimes! Other times, the attempt seems to fall flat, and I then realise that what made the song stand out were probably special sounds/effects or something else to do with the production that I cannot emulate… it’s an interesting game to play!

So far, I have tackled songs by Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears. Last week, @rico.csirait suggested that I have a go at a Lady Gaga song, so I thought I would have a go at some parts of her hit: “Born this Way”!

So, after playing the cover…

I think I am shocking myself with how much fun I am having with these pop songs! To be honest I have always thought that Lady Gaga makes excellent pop music, so perhaps I’m not surprised that at least some of her songs translate nicely to the simple solo acoustic guitar treatment – but the original music has a lot of heavy bass and almost space-station sound effects and sounds nothing like what I just did, but that doesn’t mean that it didn’t also have a catchy melody to sing and a strong message behind all the bleeps and blurps!

So there you go!

By the way, this is likely to be my last post on HIVE for about 2 weeks, as I will be travelling and have very limited access to wi-fi! I look forward to seeing you all on my return!

Hola a todos en HIVE, y especialmente a la comunidad Music Zone. ¡Mi nombre es Jasper y les escribo (y canto) desde Ciudad del Cabo en Sudáfrica! ¡Bienvenidos a la Semana 72/Ronda 3 del Hive Music Festival!

Continuamos con mi nuevo tema para mis entradas al Hive Music Festival:

A veces, como músicos, tendemos a tomarnos demasiado en serio. Definitivamente recuerdo haber hecho esto cuando comencé a tocar en pubs y noches de Open Mic cuando era más joven. ¡A veces es importante recordar que está bien simplemente divertirse con nuestra música!

Una de las formas en que me gusta hacer esto es tomar una canción pop cursi e intentar versionarla con un solo de guitarra acústica. ¿Seguirá siendo la canción pegadiza y reconocible en su forma básica debido a su estructura de acordes, melodía y ganchos? ¡A veces! Otras veces, el intento parece fracasar, y entonces me doy cuenta de que lo que hizo que la canción se destacara probablemente fueron sonidos/efectos especiales o algo más relacionado con la producción que no puedo emular... ¡es un juego interesante!

Hasta ahora he abordado canciones de Christina Aguilera y Britney Spears. La semana pasada, @rico.csirait me sugirió que probara una canción de Lady Gaga, así que pensé en probar algunas partes de su éxito: “Born this Way”.

¡Creo que me estoy sorprendiendo de lo bien que me estoy divirtiendo con estas canciones pop! Para ser honesto, siempre he pensado que Lady Gaga hace excelente música pop, así que tal vez no me sorprenda que al menos algunas de sus canciones se traduzcan muy bien en el simple tratamiento de solo de guitarra acústica, pero la música original tiene mucho bajo pesado y Casi efectos de sonido de estación espacial y no se parece en nada a lo que acabo de hacer, ¡pero eso no significa que no tuviera también una melodía pegadiza para cantar y un mensaje fuerte detrás de todos los pitidos y sonidos borrosos!

Por cierto, es probable que esta sea mi última publicación en HIVE durante aproximadamente 2 semanas, ya que viajaré y tendré acceso muy limitado a Wi-Fi. ¡Espero verlos a todos a mi regreso!
