Los Carnavales Taurinos de América, Mérida, Venezuela, 2024.

Los carnavales, para mí, son sinónimos de diversión, música y alegría. Creo que son unos días en donde la imaginación, el color y la creatividad, no tienen límite. Desde niña me ha gustado admirar los disfraces y las comparsas, creo que esta es mi parte favorita del carnaval. Aunque nunca participé en las actividades en la escuela y no recuerdo haberme disfrazado durante mi niñez, es algo que disfruto mucho y que ahora vivo con mi hijo de 04 años.

Carnivals, for me, are synonymous with fun, music and joy. I think they are days where imagination, color and creativity have no limit. Since I was a child I have loved to admire the costumes and the comparsas, I think this is my favorite part of the carnival. Although I never participated in the activities at school and I don't remember dressing up during my childhood, it is something I enjoy very much and now I live it with my 04 year old son.

Soy de Venezuela, específicamente del Estado Mérida. Esta es una ciudad llena de tradiciones y el carnaval es una de las más importantes, ya que se celebra el Carnaval Taurino de América, también conocido como la Feria Internacional del Sol. Las celebraciones de carnaval comienzan una semana antes, con un desfile tradicional donde acuden distintas bandas musicales del país. Es un desfile que atrae a muchas personas de distintas partes, por su larga trayectoria. Este año, tuvimos la oportunidad de asistir en familia, fue un día soleado, grandioso, lleno de música, tradición, disfraces y mucha alegría.

Desde tempranas horas la gente comenzó a aglomerarse en una de las avenidas principales de la ciudad, todos en familia o en grupos de amigos, todos iban preparados para pasar un día diferente fuera de casa, llevaban en sus manos, las cavas de hielo, con bebidas y comida, para disfrutar mientras el desfile iniciaba, los niños se veían adorables con disfraces divertidos, como siempre predominan el disfraz de superhéroes.

I am from Venezuela, specifically from the State of Merida. This is a city full of traditions and the carnival is one of the most important, as it celebrates the Carnaval Taurino de America, also known as the International Fair of the Sun. The carnival celebrations begin a week before, with a traditional parade where different musical bands of the country come together. It is a parade that attracts many people from different parts of the country due to its long history. This year, we had the opportunity to attend as a family, it was a sunny, great day, full of music, tradition, costumes and lots of joy.

From early hours people began to crowd in one of the main avenues of the city, all in family or in groups of friends, everyone was prepared to spend a different day away from home, they carried in their hands, the ice buckets, with drinks and food, to enjoy while the parade began, the children looked adorable with fun costumes, as always predominate the superhero costume.

El desfile inició con una de las bandas locales, y el recorrido de las reinas de las ferias. Seguían distintas comparsas, me gustó mucho: una con la temática de Willy Wonka y la fábrica de chocolates. Ellos lanzaban muchos caramelos para los niños, y estuvieron increíbles.

Otros carrozas, tenían mensajes positivos, como no usar el teléfono, mientras manejas, mientras que otras estaban dedicadas a Mérida y a sus exuberantes montañas. Los caballos se lucieron, también, aunque ellos tienen un día especial, porque en estas fechas realizan una cabalgata por toda la ciudad.

The parade started with one of the local bands, and the parade of the fair queens. There followed different comparsas, which I really liked: one with the theme of Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory. They were throwing lots of candy for the kids, and they were amazing.

Other floats had positive messages, such as don't use the phone while driving, while others were dedicated to Merida and its lush mountains. The horses looked great, too, although they have a special day, because on these dates they ride all over the city.

Por supuesto, las bandas show inyectan alegría y sazón al desfile, asistieron distintas bandas de la capital del país y otros estados como Valencia, Barinas, Táchira, Zulia, Yaracuy y muchas más, en el video, les comparto parte de este desfile, comenzando con unos personajes muy divertidos que bailaban sobre zancos, en serio, no sé cómo lo logran, yo no puedo bailar con unos zapatos de tacón, mucho menos sobre estos enormes zancos, sin duda, es un verdadero arte.

Seguidos por los "Locos de San Isidro", un baile tradicional donde esas gigantescas muñecas bailan y tienen un látigo para castigar a todo el que se porte mal, mientras bailan con música de violín al fondo. También quise compartir fragmentos de mis bandas favoritas. El merengue fue el protagonista ese año, pero la Salsa no se quedó atrás, pues no podía faltar la interpretación musical de una de las bandas de la popular canción de "Celia Cruz", porque la vida es un carnaval. Y cómo dice esta canción, a disfrutar que la vida es una, y las penas se van cantando.

Of course, the show bands injected joy and spice to the parade, different bands from the capital of the country and other states like Valencia, Barinas, Táchira, Zulia, Yaracuy and many more, in the video, I share with you part of this parade, starting with some very funny characters dancing on stilts, seriously, I do not know how they do it, I can not dance with high heels, much less on these huge stilts, no doubt, it is a real art.

Followed by the "Locos de San Isidro", a traditional dance where these giant dolls dance and have a whip to punish anyone who misbehaves, while dancing to violin music in the background. I also wanted to share snippets of my favorite bands. Merengue was the protagonist that year, but Salsa was not left behind, because I could not miss the musical interpretation of one of the bands of the popular song of "Celia Cruz", because life is a carnival. And as this song says, to enjoy life is one, and the sorrows are sung.
