86 years after its inauguration, the anniversary of the most emblematic icon of the city of Buenos Aires, the Obelisk, is being celebrated. Did you know it?

Greetings friends, yesterday this icon of the city was celebrating its anniversary, but for time reasons I dedicate this post today and what better community with affinity than architecture and design. So, let's develop a little about its history, construction and structural details.

Saludos amigos, el día de ayer este ícono de la ciudad estuvo de aniversario, pero por motivos de tiempo le dedico este post el día de hoy y en qué mejor comunidad con afinidad que la de arquitectura y diseño. Así que, vamos a desarrollar un poco sobre temas de su historia, construcción y detalles estructurales.

Brief history with illustrations

In 1936, for the month of February, a decree was signed for the construction of a monument to symbolize the importance of the Capital of an entire nation, a monument that did not exist before in the country and that would be located where there was a church dedicated to San Nicolás de Bari, the one where the Argentine flag was raised for the first time.

The architect they contacted was Alberto Prebisch, an architect graduated from the University of Buenos Aires, who was also mayor of the city and worked on works such as residential buildings, houses for homes and offices and author of the renowned and famous Gran Rex theater.

The obelisk was built in record time starting its construction a month after the signing of this decree, and by the next 60 days, two months the obelisk would have been inaugurated in the Plaza de la República in the neighborhood of San Nicolás between the intersections of Avenida Corrientes.

En el año 1936, para el mes de febrero se firmó un decreto para la construcción de un monumento que simbolice la importancia de la Capital de toda una nación, un monumento que antes no existía en el país y que sería ubicado dónde antes existía una iglesia dedicada a San Nicolás de Bari, aquella en la cual fué izada por primera vez la bandera argentina.

El arquitecto con el que se pusieron en contacto fue Alberto Prebisch, arquitecto egresado de la universidad de Buenos Aires, quién fue además intendente de la ciudad y trabajó en obras como edificios de residencias, casas para viviendas y oficinas y autor del reconocido y famoso teatro Gran Rex.

El obelisco fué construido en tiempo récord empezando sus obras un mes siguiente a la firma de éste decreto, ya para los próximos 60 días, dos meses el obelisco habría sido inaugurado en la plaza de la República en el barrio de San Nicolás entre las intersecciones de la avenida corrientes.

Structural details

To complete this work in two months, materials such as fast hardening cement and white stone brought from the province of Cordoba were used, working in sections of two meters, thus ending with a structure that has a height of almost 68 meters with a pyramid-shaped tip, traditional of the obelisks.

A financial data for this construction is that its budget for that time was 1,000 U.S. dollars today which would be 200,000 Argentine pesos. The workers who were in charge were more than 150 employees.

Para culminar ésta obra en dos meses se utilizó materiales como cemento de rápido endurecimiento y piedra blanca traída de la provincia de Córdoba, haciendo el trabajo por secciones de dos metros, finalizando así con una estructura que tiene una altura de casi 68 metros con una punta en forma de pirámide, tradicional de los obeliscos.

Un dato financiero para ésta construcción es que su presupuesto para esa época fué de 1.000 dólares americanos al día de hoy lo que serían 200.000 pesos argentinos. Los trabajadores que estuvieron a cargo fueron más de 150 empleados.

General Information

Since its inauguration, the Obelisk of Buenos Aires has been the most emblematic and famous icon and monument of the city and the country where various events of different kinds, sports celebrations and tourist meeting points take place.

We are going to leave here two more well-known photographs of the time when the structure had its first years of life and you can notice a difference in terms of its surroundings since at first the obelisk was in an open area.

Desde su inauguración el Obelisco de Buenos Aires ha sido el ícono y monumento más emblemático y famoso de la ciudad y del país en dónde se llevan a cabo diversas manifestaciones de distintas índoles, celebraciones deportivas y puntos de encuentro turísticos.

Vamos a dejar por acá dos fotografías más muy conocidas de la época en dónde la estructura tenía sus primeros años de vida y se puede notar una diferencia en cuanto a sus alrededores ya que en un principio el obelisco estaba en una área abierta.

To Conclude

We end this post by mentioning the national or international anniversaries where the obelisk is the main protagonist because for these occasions the structure is illuminated in relation to each reason, being these days against the fight against HIV, where a giant condom was placed on the obelisk, a case that was not to the liking of many. Just as it was also dressed as a Christmas tree in the 70's and many other cases.

As a main entrance I made a video yesterday especially for you and the community of Arquitectura+Diseño where I show the obelisk from different angles at sunset and at night since it was my time availability. The photo music I used belongs to the late Argentine Gustavo Cerati with his band Soda Estéreo, the song is titled En La Ciudad De La Furia (In The City Of Rage). The city of Buenos Aires is known by that name because of its high activity as a metropolis.

Finalizamos este post haciendo mención a las efemérides nacionales o internacionales en dónde el obelisco es el principal protagonista ya que para éstas ocasiones la estructura se ilumina en relación a cada motivo, siendo estos días contra la lucha por el VIH, en dónde se le colocó un preservativo gigante al obelisco, caso que no fue del agrado de muchos. Así como también se vistió de árbol de navidad en los años 70 y múltiples casos más.

De entrada principal realicé un vídeo el día de ayer especialmente para ustedes y la comunidad de Arquitectura+Diseño en dónde muestro el obelisco desde diferentes ángulos al atardecer y en la noche ya que era mi disponibilidad de tiempo. La música de foto que utilicé pertenece al argentino fallecido Gustavo Cerati con su banda Soda Estéreo, el tema se titula En La Ciudad De La Furia. La ciudad de Buenos Aires es conocida por ese nombre por su alta actividad como metrópolis.
