Chorale Prelude - Craig A. Penfield | Hereford Cathedral (UK)

This evening, @partitura and I were discussing technical things about our Hauptwerk virtual organ software. One interesting thing to me is that even though we are both organists (a very niche area already!) we still have very differing tastes in repertoire and types of organs. Whilst @partitura is playing with his Schnittger organ, I'm over here in Australia enjoying a Willis organ sampled at Hereford Cathedral, UK. The beauty of Hauptwerk is that we are able to play these instruments from all around the world which would otherwise be difficult to visit and obtain access to.

The Schnittger sound is vastly different from an English Willis sound. I prefer the warm and full bodied tones of the English organ, whereas a Schnittger organ is probably more transparent and clear which is suited to baroque compositions. The English cathedral sound is synonymous with colourful hymn playing and choir anthems, however this recording is much more subdued—it only features the single 8' Stopped Flute on the Swell (with octave coupler) and the 16' Pedal Bourdon.
