MI DISCIPLINA FAVORITA: ULTIMATE FRISBEE

El Ultimate es una combinación final de varias experiencias deportivas, por eso recibe este nombre, tiene fundamentos de otros deportes, haces pases a cualquier dirección como en el fútbol, no puedes correr con el disco en las manos como en el básquet, maneja una estrategia de anotación similar a la del fútbol americano, además requiere muchísima exigencia física. El implemento que se utiliza para jugar es un Frisbee, por eso recibe este nombre final.

Este deporte es autoarbitrado, lo que lo diferencia de todos los deportes que he practicado, y realmente se cumple, tiene un verdadero sentido de fair play que es conocido como Espíritu de Juego.

The "Ultimate" is a final combination of several sports experiences, that is why it receives this name, it has fundamentals of other sports, you make passes to any direction as in soccer, you cannot run with the disc in your hands as in basketball, manages a scoring strategy similar to that of American soccer, and it requires a lot of physical demand. The implement used to play is a Frisbee, that is why it receives this final name.
This sport is self-arbitrated, which sets it apart from all the sports I have played, and it really delivers, it has a true sense of fair play that is known as Spirit of the Game.

ESPÍRITU DE JUEGO

El hecho de conocer el reglamento, apegarse a ser honesto, tener autocontrol, mejorar la capacidad para la resolución de conflictos a través del diálogo, evitar el contacto físico, ser imparcial, y divertirse en todo momento es lo que hace verdaderamente especial a esta disciplina.

Reconozco que puede ser muy difícil la transición de una disciplina a otra, yo vengo de jugar basquet y futbol de salon toda mi vida, en estos deportes hay mucha adrenalina, y hay un concepto permanente: “si me das, te doy”, que quiere decir, que si alguien juega rudo (coloquialmente conocido en Venezuela como jugar caimán) contra ti, tú también vas a hacerlo, y en el Ultimate Frisbee, esto NO puede pasar.

Lo que me sorprende de esta disciplina es que no hay sanciones fuertes, nunca puedes expulsar a un jugador de la cancha (no hay tarjetas rojas). Si puedes hacer un “llamado de tiempo” para que los jugadores reaccionen a sus comportamientos inapropiados. Esto genera algo muy valioso en cada persona: la oportunidad de cambiar y rectificar.

SPIRIT OF THE GAME
Knowing the rules, sticking to being honest, having self-control, improving conflict resolution skills through dialogue, avoiding physical contact, being impartial, and having fun at all times is what makes this discipline truly special.
I recognize that it can be very difficult to transition from one discipline to another, I come from playing basketball and futbol de salon all my life, in these sports there is a lot of adrenaline, and there is a permanent concept: "if you hit me, I hit you", which means, if someone plays rough (colloquially known in Venezuela as playing caiman) against you, you are going to do it too, and in Ultimate Frisbee, this can NOT happen.
What surprises me about this discipline is that there are no strong penalties, you can never eject a player from the court (no red cards). If you can make a "time call" for players to react to their inappropriate behaviors. This generates something very valuable in each person: the opportunity to change and rectify.

VALORES HUMANOS

Este deporte ayuda muchísimo a fortalecer aspectos individuales y colectivos, en mi experiencia, me ha ayudado a construir una mejor personalidad, más pacífica, más amable, escuchar otros puntos de vista, tener mejor percepción de las situaciones, llegar a acuerdos que eviten el conflicto, a mejorar mi trato con otras personas, a reconocer fortalezas y desventajas en mí.

Durante la adrenalina de un partido no tienes tu mente tan calma para solucionar conflictos sin pegar gritos o con una nivel de tensión elevado, en el Ultimate Frisbee, este aspecto se trabaja, se mejora en cada entrenamiento, en cada disco. Cada vez que llega alguien nuevo es muy gratificante ver su evolución y crecimiento como ser humano.

Obviamente quieres ganar, pero tu deseo de respetar los acuerdos y valores de tu equipo no sobrepasan ninguna intención. Te sientes parte de la identidad de un colectivo.

El Ultimate Frisbee, al igual que muchos deportes desarrolla autoconfianza, seguridad, solidez, te sientes poderoso, te llena de vida, te sientes importante y pieza fundamental en cada aspecto que te toque asumir.

HUMAN VALUES
This sport helps a lot to strengthen individual and collective aspects, in my experience, it has helped me to build a better personality, more peaceful, kinder, listen to other points of view, have a better perception of situations, reach agreements that avoid conflict, to improve my dealings with other people, to recognize strengths and disadvantages in me.
During the adrenaline of a match you don't have your mind so calm to solve conflicts without shouting or with a high level of tension, in Ultimate Frisbee, this aspect is worked on, it is improved in each training, in each disc. Every time someone new comes in it is very rewarding to see their evolution and growth as a human being.
Obviously you want to win, but your desire to respect the agreements and values of your team does not override any intentions. You feel part of the identity of a collective.
Ultimate Frisbee, like many sports, develops self-confidence, security, solidity, you feel powerful, it fills you with life and you feel important and fundamental in every aspect you take on.

MUCHAS OPORTUNIDADES

El Ultimate Frisbee es el deporte que más oportunidades me ha brindado como atleta, he jugado en muchos equipos y categorías, he fundado clubes, he organizado competencias en escenarios importantes en Venezuela, he tenido cargos Internacionales como organizadora de esta disciplina, he constituido equipos que han logrado grandes resultados, he sido convocado a jugar eventos de gran magnitud para representar a Venezuela, ahora mismo soy profe de Ultimate Frisbee en un Colegio de niñas en Caracas.

Tengo muchísimo que agradecer, y también muchas experiencias que me gustaría compartir en otras secciones de este blog. No solo hablar de reglas, de cómo se juega, o cómo conseguir medallas y reconocimiento individual, sino compartir con ustedes cómo llevar un equipo hasta la final de competiciones importantes, sin tener ningún tipo de apoyo Institucional, y creo que esté punto es lo más importante, todos hablamos de ganar pero nadie comparte cómo alinear la mente - el trabajo - y el corazón para conseguir grandes resultados.

MANY OPPORTUNITIES
Ultimate Frisbee is the sport that has given me more opportunities as an athlete, I have played in many teams and categories, I have founded clubs, I have organized competitions in major venues in Venezuela, I have held international positions as an organizer of this discipline, I have formed teams that have achieved great results, I have been called to play major events to represent Venezuela, right now I am an Ultimate Frisbee teacher in a girls school in Caracas.
I have a lot to be thankful for, and also many experiences that I would like to share in other sections of this blog. Not only talk about rules, how to play, or how to get medals and individual recognition, but share with you how to take a team to the final of important competitions, without having any kind of institutional support, and I think this point is the most important, we all talk about winning but nobody shares how to align the mind - the work - and the heart to achieve great results.

Este post solo contiene las razones más claras por las cuales me enamoré del Ultimate Frisbee. Como todos los atletas hay procesos que vivimos en cada disciplina: experiencias, motivaciones, decepciones, amores, desamores, lesiones, asumir responsabilidades, procesos burocráticos en países como el mío, el ¡COVID!...

Poco a poco iré compartiendo con ustedes un poquito de lo que sé.

This post contains only the clearest reasons why I fell in love with Ultimate Frisbee. Like all athletes there are processes that we go through in every discipline: experiences, motivations, disappointments, loves, heartbreaks, injuries, taking on responsibilities, bureaucratic processes in countries like mine, the COVID!....
Little by little I will share with you a little of what I know.
