[Podcast] Social Media Will Drain You by @jongolson on 3Speak
I've been on chain since 2017.... And over that time, my effort for building a following has been here. And never on the web 2 stuff. And there's a reason why... I discuss that and much more in tod...

Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages, welcome to another episode of Django's Thoughts on the blockchain. This is an exclusive. I know you feel very special, because it's an exclusive. It's on Hive. It's only on Hive and three-speak, mainly because I really, to be honest with you guys, I... don't really care about social media these days. Maybe I'm just getting old and bitter. All I care about, the only kind of influence, let's say, I want, or the only kind of content I want to create is on chain. I used to upload all my podcasts, and then be on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, and I'd share it on YouTube and whatnot. I don't know, guys. Have you guys, like, looked, have you taken a... a big picture snapshot of social media. I'm going to have a little conspiracy theory tonight, guys. I truly believe this stuff is designed to basically get people angry with each other, to divide people, and just to cause absolute chaos. So, the reason I wanted to talk about this today is one of my best friends on planet Earth, him and I... talk, you know, often, not as often as we'd like, just because we're grown and families and work and everything. But when we get, when we have our little discussions, it ends up being, you know, a good hour or so, and this is, you know, talking about life and everything. And this friend of mine used to be really into the politics stuff. Like, he would, he would follow the social media stuff. He, you know, he was, you know, he'd get really upset about certain things. And, you know, I'm not going to say I don't either. Like, I, I read some of this stuff online, and I get, I get perturbed, you know, but generally, it was, he was passionate about it. He was really, really passionate about his beliefs and what he thought was right. and what was wrong on social media. And I've noticed the trend, and I brought this up with him, I noticed he, you know, in the past year or so, he really hasn't been talking much about it. So I asked him about it, and he, and this is kind of going back about the social media and why I really want to focus my energy and efforts here on chain and not, not elsewhere. There's no real algorithms on Hive. There's nothing that says, oh, you know, um, let's feed this type of hatred content or let's feed this type of divisive content to someone's feed and get them arguing for engagement. There's nothing like that on Hive. Well, that's basically what social media is. Social media and all of its glory is basically the algorithms know that it's not the quality of content that gets shared. It is the engagement. It's what... What fires people up? What gets people talking? Now, when the algorithms are looking for talking, they don't care if it's negative talk. They just want talk. And this is, going back to the friend of mine, he mentioned this to me, and it really hit me. He's like, I read, this is, I'm paraphrasing what he said. It's like, I realized that I would sit there for hours, and I was arguing with bots. I realized I was feeding the beast. So what he was doing, what he realized is that he would get all passionate and fired up about, you know, an account that said something he disagreed with, and when he would engage with it, the bot, the AI bot, the chat bot, whatever, would rebuke him and respond to get him even more fired up. So he's sitting there going, well, I'm arguing with a, with a computer, and I'm feeding the engagement machine of these big, huge social media, um, companies. Why am I doing that? What, what, what, you know. What's point? And he understood that, and it was like, yeah, like, I was like, yeah, you're right, man. And it's one thing about me, I don't know if you guys have followed me, you know, for any amount of time on traditional social media. I really don't get up in air about much, because it's the internet and everyone's right, right? But now it's not. people's opinions now it's bots and AI chatbots that are feeding these beasts now so for me personally it was just it was never I would never get too up in air but have you just take a like this is the thing take a step step back and look it's never the positive stuff it's never the the the warm and fuzzy stuff the good news that gets shared it's always the negative stuff think about it when you're driving and there's an accident You stop and pull, you don't pull, you don't stop, but you pull over and look, because everyone loves, we're sinful beings, we love carnage, apparently, we love the train wrecks, we love to look at drama, we love the, and these social media companies feed off of this, they've made billions and billions and billions off of tapping in to your inability. And when I say your, I mean, humanity's pointing the finger right back at me too. Our, let's say, inability to stay away from the negative stuff. We love the negative stuff. We feed off the negative stuff. Well, again, look, I'm not perfect. God knows I've sinned and made my errors in my life, but I just, I never. got the profitability, let's say, of arguing with people online about political beliefs, about religious beliefs, about anything. It just, there was, there was, nothing positive came out of it. Because when someone believes something, that's what they're going to believe. And you can't change their mind. You can plant seeds, but you're not going to change their mind. So, I don't know, guys. I know a big chunk of the people on Hive. You guys are a younger generation. I can't believe I'm saying that. I always used to think I was young now. I'm becoming the old grumpy guy. And I know you guys, like social media is a big part of your lives. I just, I want you guys to understand that when you read this stuff of how negative the world is and how bad things are and how much one person hates another person and this political party hates this political party and there's wars and there's wars and there's all this stuff. Go out for a walk. Go out and engage with people in the real world, and you'll see that it's not as bad as social media makes you, makes it look like it is. There's a lot of good going on out there. Yes, there's negative stuff. Yes, it's a fallen world. There's going to be negative stuff all the time. But don't let social media take up all of that amazing... brain power you got to think on good things. Don't let it. Don't feed it. It's not worth it. It doesn't do anything for your life. It stresses you out. And there's so much more beauty out there when we focus on that rather than the negative. So, and this is coming from apparently something out. Like, I'm Canadian, so I don't understand the political system in America. Apparently something happened midterms or something yesterday. You know, people are all up in air. Look, right wing, left wing, it's all the same evil bird to me. You guys have a great day. Be kind to each other, you know, smile a little bit more. It's not that bad out there.
