The word "Salsa" || La palabra "Salsa"

For many years there has been a controversy about the origin of the word "salsa" to refer to Caribbean tropical music. There have been many arguments in favor of each thesis and there are those who have assumed aggressive and radical positions on the matter.

Phidias Danilo Escalona was a Venezuelan broadcaster who for many years had a program dedicated to these musical genres, and which bore the name of "la hora de la salsa" (the hour of salsa [souce]), since one of the sponsors of the radio program was a famous brand of tomato sauce.

In an interview, on the occasion of Richie, Ray and Bobby Cruz's visit to Venezuela, looking for the definition of the music they made, they made a comparison with ketchup, since a number of elements were mixed there.

Faced with this definition, Phidias took the expression and asked them again, -so the music you make is salsa (a sauce)? - and he seized on the affirmative answer to repeat it over and over again.

The name of the program, of course, acquired a new meaning, because now the salsa hour alluded to the genre.

It is from this fact that the term "salsa" began to be used with this connotation and this is shown in the records of this New York group, or in the record "Llegó la salsa", by the Venezuelan Federico Betancourt.

Among many of the arguments against it, a song by Cuban Ignacio Piñero, "Échale salsita", is cited. But this song, in a very clear way, alludes to salsa (sauce) from a gastronomic point of view.

It is necessary to remember that what is attributed to Phidias Danilo Escalona is not the word "salsa", as such, but its use to refer to that musical movement that stems from the roots of Cuban music and its mixture with many other genres, both from the Caribbean, as well as jazz and other American musical forms.

Desde hace muchos años se generó una polémica acerca del origen de la palabra "salsa", para referirse a la música tropical caribeña. Se han esgrimida cantidad de argumentos en favor de cada tesis y hay quienes han asumido posiciones agresivas y radicales al respecto.

Phidias Danilo Escalona fue un locutor venezolano que durante muchos años tuvo un programa dedicado a esos géneros musicales, y que ostentaba el nombre de la hora de la salsa, pues uno de los patrocinantes del espacio radial era una famosa marca de salsa de tomate.

En una entrevista, con ocasión de la visita a Venezuela de Richie, Ray y Bobby Cruz, buscando la definición de la música que ellos hacían, hicieron la comparación con el ketchup, pues allí se mezclaban una cantidad de elementos.

Ante esa definición, Phidias tomó la expresión y les volvió a preguntar, -¿entonces la música que ustedes hacen es una salsa? - y se agarró de la respuesta afirmativa para repetirlo una y otra vez.

El nombre del programa, por supuesto, adquirió un nuevo sentido, pues ahora la hora de la salsa hacía alusión al género.

Es a partir de ese hecho, que el término "salsa" se empieza a utilizar con esa connotación y así lo muestran los discos de esa agrupación neoyorquina, o el disco "Llegó la salsa", del venezolano Federico Betancourt.

Entre muchos de los argumentos en contra, se cita una canción del cubano Ignacio Piñero, "Échale salsita". Pero esta canción, de manera muy clara, hace alusión es a la salsa desde el punto de vista gastronómico.

Allí se hace necesario recordar, que lo que se atribuye a Phidias Danilo Escalona, no es la palabra "salsa", como tal, sino su utilización para referirse a ese movimiento musical que parte de las raíces de la música cubana y su mezcla con muchos otros géneros, tanto del Caribe, como del jazz y otras formas musicales estadounidenses.
