The celebration of Christmas in Venezuela goes far beyond being a religious festivity limited to December 25th. In our country it has become a cultural phenomenon that determines a multitude of manifestations in the traditions and has its impact in the food, in parallel events, many of them linked also to religious rites, but that have been dissociated in great measure from them, to become "simple" tradition, reason why people not linked to the religious belief, also join these festivities. Music plays a starring role in these celebrations.

In many cases these activities begin in October and last until Candlemas day, February 2nd.

One of the musical manifestations that initially were linked to Christmas is the gaita, a rhythm of the Venezuelan west. But in spite of having been born as a regional manifestation, in the 60s it manages to transcend those borders until becoming a national expression.

Gaita groups have always been in search of sonorities and it is in this way that a very outstanding musician in the genre, Nelson Martínez, wrote a series of songs with the "tamborera" rhythm, one of the products of this musical search.

This song is dedicated to another saint, the so called " Black Saint", San Benito de Palermo (Benedict the Moor), which in Venezuela is celebrated on December 27th .

It is the Tamborera N° 9 my participation for the Hive Open Mic, in its week 30.

La celebración de la navidad en Venezuela va mucho más allá de ser una festividad religiosa circunscrita al 25 de diciembre. En nuestro país se ha convertido en un fenómeno cultural que determina multitud de manifestaciones en las tradiciones y tiene su impacto en la comida, en eventos paralelos, muchos de ellos vinculados también a ritos religiosos, pero que se han desvinculado en gran medida de ellos, para convertirse en "simple" tradición, razón por la cual personas no vinculadas a la creencia religiosa, también se unen a estas fiestas. La música lleva un rol estelar en estas celebraciones.

En muchos casos estas actividades dan inicio en octubre y perduran hasta el día de la Candelaria, el 2 de febrero.

Una de las manifestaciones musicales que inicialmente estaban vinculadas a la navidad, es la gaita, un ritmo del occidente venezolano. Pero a pesar de haber nacido como una manifestación regional, en los años 60 logra trascender esas fronteras hasta convertirse en una expresión nacional.

Los grupos de gaita siempre han estado en la búsqueda de sonoridades y es así como un músico muy destacado en el género, Nelson Martínez, escribió una serie de canciones con el ritmo de "tamborera", uno de los productos de esa búsqueda musical.

Esta canción está dedicada a otro santo, el llamado "Santo negro", San Benito de Palermo, que en Venezuela se celebra el 27 de diciembre.

Es la Tamborera N° 9 mi participación para el Hive Open Mic, en su semana 30.
