Since I was a child I have been a lover of Jamaican rhythms, which my father brought to my house in the 60's from the Caribbean island. That made that later groups like The Police, with their cross-over music, quickly entered my taste. Of course and as expected, Sting is one of the singers that is on my list of favorites. And I particularly like this song, because although it maintains a reggae essence, it has a very particular sound.
For many years I have also included this song in my repertoire for those moments of variety, for moments of change in rhythms and moods.
The group King Changó, in the voice of Blanquito Man, recorded an extraordinary version called " Venezuelan in New York". Perhaps that version would have suited me better, especially taking into account my "not English" accent, but I preferred to keep the delicacy and style of Sting's original version.
This is my participation in the Hive Open Mic, week 64.
I don't drink coffee, I take tea, my dear
I like my toast done on one side
And you can hear it in my accent when I talk
I'm an Englishman in New YorkSee me walking down Fifth Avenue
A walking cane here at my side
I take it everywhere I walk
I'm an Englishman in New YorkOh, I'm an alien, I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York
Oh, I'm an alien, I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New YorkIf "manners maketh man" as someone said
He's the hero of the day
It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile
Be yourself no matter what they sayOh, I'm an alien, I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York
Oh, I'm an alien, I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New YorkModesty, propriety can lead to notoriety
You could end up as the only one
Gentleness, sobriety are rare in this society
At night a candle's brighter than the sunTakes more than combat gear to make a man
Takes more than a license for a gun
Confront your enemies, avoid them when you can
A gentleman will walk but never runIf "manners maketh man" as someone said
He's the hero of the day
It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile
Be yourself no matter what they sayBe yourself no matter what they say
Be yourself no matter what they say
