HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 51 Third Round (ENG-ESP): "Moondance" by Van Morrison (feat. Toothbrush!)

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 51 / Round 3 of the Hive Music Festival!

It occurs to me that with all the folk, blues, rock and even the occasional rap that I have done so far for the Hive Music Festival, one genre I haven’t really explored is jazz. Jazz is an interesting genre of music – there are a lot of jokes online about how you can’t make a mistake in jazz – you just repeat the mistake with confidence, and then everyone thinks that you chose an “interesting” note on purpose because there “are no rules in jazz anyway”! Hahaha!

So, what do I even know about jazz? Not much! I know that you can get some jazzier feeling into your guitar playing by turning your majors into major-7ths, and your minors into minor-7ths!

Another thing that I love about jazz is when drummers put down their sticks and use brushes instead! So chilled! So groovy! Well, I play acoustic guitar but is there anything I can do to get that feeling into my playing? What if I use an old toothbrush? If it works, I will have a cool party-trick, and that will mean one less plastic toothbrush having to land up in a landfill – which is a bonus!

Alright, so let’s choose a song where I can combine those two ideas nicely! I love Van Morrison, and one of his jazzier songs is “Moondance”, which has been more recently covered by Michael Buble. It definitely has that shuffling vibe that would suit playing drums with brushes, and it turns out that it is based around Minor-7ths as well… perfect!

What is interesting, and quite hard to believe about “Moondance”, is that it featured on Van Morrison’s third album (also called “Moondance” after this wonderful song) in 1970… however the song “Moondance” was only released as a single in late 1977! Two other songs (“Crazy Love” and “Come Running”) from the album were chosen as singles back in 1970, and as good as those two songs were, I can’t believe they left “Moondance” off at the time!

And good grief, many other of my favourite Van Morrison songs were also on the album and not released as singles! “And It Stoned Me”, “Into the Mystic” and “Caravan” are all fantastic songs – were tastes in music that different back then, or am I biased after growing up with these songs all my life?

So, @itzchemaya (the jazz lover) and @rorykl (another acoustic guitarist who loves percussive techniques) – did the toothbrush work, or is it “blasphemy” to play such a wonderful song like this?

Hola a todos en HIVE, y especialmente a la comunidad Music Zone. ¡Mi nombre es Jasper y les escribo (y canto) desde Ciudad del Cabo en Sudáfrica! ¡Bienvenido a la Semana 51/Ronda 3 del Hive Music Festival!

Se me ocurre que con todo el folk, el blues, el rock e incluso el rap ocasional que he hecho hasta ahora para el Hive Music Festival, un género que realmente no he explorado es el jazz. El jazz es un género musical interesante; hay muchos chistes en línea sobre cómo no puedes cometer un error en el jazz; simplemente repites el error con confianza y luego todos piensan que elegiste una nota "interesante" a propósito porque ¡De todos modos “no hay reglas en el jazz”! ¡Jajaja!

Entonces, ¿qué sé yo sobre el jazz? ¡Poco! ¡Sé que puedes conseguir un sentimiento más jazzístico en tu forma de tocar la guitarra convirtiendo tus mayores en séptimas mayores y tus menores en séptimas menores!

¡Otra cosa que me encanta del jazz es cuando los bateristas dejan las baquetas y usan cepillos en su lugar! ¡Qué frío! ¡Qué genial! Bueno, toco la guitarra acústica, pero ¿hay algo que pueda hacer para conseguir esa sensación al tocar? ¿Qué pasa si uso un cepillo de dientes viejo? Si funciona, tendré un truco genial y eso significará que un cepillo de dientes de plástico menos tendrá que terminar en un vertedero, ¡lo cual es una ventaja!

¡Muy bien, entonces elijamos una canción donde pueda combinar esas dos ideas muy bien! Me encanta Van Morrison, y una de sus canciones más jazzísticas es “Moondance”, que ha sido versionada más recientemente por Michael Bublé. Definitivamente tiene esa vibra de barajado que sería adecuada para tocar la batería con escobillas, y resulta que también se basa en séptimas menores... ¡perfecto!

Lo interesante, y bastante difícil de creer, sobre “Moondance”, es que apareció en el tercer álbum de Van Morrison (también llamado “Moondance” por esta maravillosa canción) en 1970… sin embargo, la canción “Moondance” sólo fue lanzada como single en finales de 1977! Otras dos canciones (“Crazy Love” y “Come Running”) del álbum fueron elegidas como sencillos en 1970, y por muy buenas que fueran esas dos canciones, ¡no puedo creer que dejaran de lado “Moondance” en ese momento!

¡Y Dios mío, muchas otras de mis canciones favoritas de Van Morrison también estaban en el álbum y no se lanzaron como singles! “And It Stoned Me”, “Into the Mystic” y “Caravan” son todas canciones fantásticas. ¿Eran los gustos musicales tan diferentes en aquel entonces, o soy parcial después de haber crecido con estas canciones toda mi vida?
