HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 55 First Round (ENG-ESP): "Under the Bridge" by Red Hot Chili Peppers

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 55 / Round 1 of the Hive Music Festival!

Last week I showed you a first draft of an original song, but now that the Music Zone has announced a new Songwriting Challenge for brand new unreleased songs (https://ecency.com/hive-120026/@musiczone/1st-phase-of-the-song-challenge-music-zone-oror-for-songwriters), I suppose I had better save any new riffs and ideas I come up with for attempting to create songs for that!

So, let’s do a nice cover today. I have been looking over what I have been submitting lately in terms of covers, and a lot of them have been the sort of classic songs I would have picked up by listening to my parents’ music collection as a child – songs like “Moondance” by Van Morrison, “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen and songs by Simon &Garfunkel.

But what about my own music tastes growing up? I became a teenager just as the 1990’s turned into the 2000’s, but my sister was slightly older than me, so I got to hear a lot of Nirvana, Oasis, Radiohead, Googoo Dolls, Collective Soul, Silverchair, Tracy Chapman, Pearl Jam, Alannis Morisette and other staples of the 1990’s!

What about Red Hot Chili Peppers? By the time I was a teenager I was spending my pocket money on their “Californication” album, but something I could steal off my sister was the older “Blood Sugar Sex Magic” album from earlier in their career, which features probably their most famous song of all “Under the Bridge”.

“Under the Bridge” is such a great and fascinating song about drug addiction, but musically it is really interesting too. The main part of the song is in a different key to the climatic ending where it sounds like an angelic children’s choir are joining in to sing the phrase “Under the bridge downtown… (is where I drew some blood)”, but the two parts seem to blend seamlessly together.

There are also these cool pauses on a jazzy major-seventh chord between the verses, which is really unusual for a rock song.

Here is the original version, so you can see that it is a bit of a task to try and do a solo acoustic cover of the song, but let me give it a shot!
