There are Five things that will kill your food storage in no time. The last thing you want is to spend days, even months building and prepping your food storage just to have it go to waste by these common yet very preventable killers.

In this video I go over the five things that often destroy food storage and what you can do to prevent it from happening to your own food storage.

Also I have a course on building your own food storage with 31 total lessons to take you from complete food storage newbie to building a food supply that will last you and your family for years! Check it out at The Homestead Prepper’s Guide To Food Storage

    1 Light

Ever notice things in front of an open window lose color and quickly degrade? Well your food is much the same. Light exposure will reduce the nutritional value of your food and make them go bad sooner. Keeping them out of direct sunlight is a must.

    2 Moisture

Moisture is a common issue that makes food go bad. Moldy bread and other microbes which rot and damage the food over time. Moisture greatly affects the shelf life of your foods. For myself I love using my freeze dryer which removes nearly all of the moisture out of the food but keep the nutritional value intact. Using a freeze dryer allows me to preserve foods for up to 30 years!

    3 Temp

Ever hear of a root cellar? A root cellar is a cool, dark area to store your foods. They are built underground where temperatures remain roughly the same all the time. Temperature fluctuations can also cause damage to your food storage.

    4 Oxygen

Simple ways of removing oxygen from your food storage would be things such as a vacuum sealer or for even longer term food storage mylar bags with oxygen absorbers.

    5 Pests

One of the most damaging things that can happen to your food storage are pests! Insects, rats and mice are the most common so be sure the area you are storing your food is well sealed off and perhaps having a few traps around if one should slip in.
