I'm so thrilled for the opportunity to perform this special song in the Hive Open Mic community for the week #194. This event has showcased amazing talent and I'm honored my name joins this week.
In keeping with the holiday spirit still lingering in these early cold harmattan days, I've chosen to sing the poignant Christmas ballad "Mary Did You Know." Originally recorded by Christian artists like Michael English and Kenny Rogers & Wynonna Judd, this song poses a series of profound questions to Mary mother of Jesus about her baby boy's divine destiny. As the lyrics imagine Mary grappling to understand Jesus' role as savior of mankind, it allows listeners to reflect on the nativity story from her gentle perspective.
While the Christmas classic has been covered by numerous vocalists in different styles over the years, I will perform a stripped down yet sweet acapela arrangement in my own way. My hope is the unadorned but lyrical treatment allows the contemplative message questioning Mary across the years to truly resonate with open ears.
Even days past Christmas, "Mary Did You Know" carries a timeless power to stir awe and conviction. This event often draws diverse creative spirits and thoughtful minds hungry for inspiration between heavier news cycles. In such company, I'm excited to sow a small prayerful seed asking my own questions about perceiving sacred glory inhabiting humble, unexpected vessels still today. By inviting you all audience into reflective space honoring biblical mysteries made intimate, my aim is to make you guys have a lingering notes of grace, no matter your beliefs.
Lyrics
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy
Has come to make you new?
This child that you delivered, will soon deliver you.
