Open-source ≠ Free speech, decentralization - Community Token Talk

There is a lot of talk about free speech, censorship, decentralization. Every few weeks there is a new platform claiming they will not censor or ban people.

Just like this conversation of Katherine Boyle and Jack Dorsey about Substack and Ghost.

The first thing that people need to understand is that as long as an app owns your account it is not a question will they censor, it is a question of when they will censor.
As long as there is a company owning your account they will have to ban and censor people. The owner could be the hardest free speech advocate it is still a person that can be influenced, pressured, forced to do it.

One of the things that Bitcoin made possible is you personally being able to own your account, not the banks. No one can take your Bitcoin wallet if you don't give them your seeds.

What Hive is doing is giving you an option to own your social media account. Apps / front ends don't have a monopoly on your account and data. The only thing apps can do to compete with other apps is to provide you with the best users experience.
