The Privateer Series is undoubtedly one of the well-like pirate-themed series minted in the last 5 years. The Kraken high relief silver round is a favorite of many stackers, myself included.
The kraken (/ˈkrɑːkən/) is a legendary cephalopod-like sea monster of gigantic size in Scandinavian folklore. According to the Norse sagas, the kraken dwells off the coasts of Norway and Greenland and terrorizes nearby sailors. Authors over the years have postulated that the legend may have originated from sightings of giant squids that may grow to 13–15 meters (40–50 feet) in length. The sheer size and fearsome appearance attributed to the kraken have made it a common ocean-dwelling monster in various fictional works. The kraken has been the focus of many superstitious sailors passing the North Atlantic and especially sailors from the Nordic countries due to their proximity and its Scandinavian origin. Throughout the centuries the kraken has been a staple part of sailors' superstitions and mythos being heavily linked to sailors' ability of telling a tall tale. Source
Intaglio Mint, a private, boutique minting operation released this silver round as a limited series. Unlike other rounds, this one bears the 2020 year date. I think that it is a good addition to my 2020 silver stack. It also makes me wonder if the mint plans to release a 2021 silver round along the same theme.
OBVERSE: The detailed and high-relief depiction of the Kraken attacking a vessel, sending sailors into a panic.
REVERSE: Intaglio Mint logo set on radial burst surrounded by stippled border reading “ONE TROY OUNCE” above and “.999 FINE SILVER” below on textured background, flanked by mintage year in roman numerals “MMXX”.
