musical face-off)

Somedays back, My friend on Instagram with the name, dadotman, a bright guitarist and a founder of a small Christian community known as "" without walls "", invited me to what he called get-together mini concert. It was scheduled to take place at the University of Ibadan, precisely at a small garden, known as Love garden

I was super excited because it was a great opportunity to finally meet my guitar mentor face-to-face. I would now finally get to ask him the questions I was piling up whenever I try to learn from his online guitar Fingerstyle lessons.. Yes! He's got great Percussive Fingerstyle skills on the acoustic guitar and he's also sort of Celebrity. I mean, he's got like about 13 thousand active followers on Instagram!

Because of how excited I was, I arrived at the venue quite earlier.
I did not even go with my own guitar because I thought to myself, "what's the need"? I am going to meet a much more professional guitarist. I should only observe and learn.

I sat by the corner and gradually, people started gathering up for the get-together, mostly university students. From their discussions they all seemed to have encountered him previously. It's going to be my first.

Shortly, he arrived with his brown Guitar that I admired so much. He looked and dressed quite simple and casual than I expected him to be.
He recognised me and walked up straight to me and we exchanged pleasantries. He was quite humble and easy-going.
There and then I discovered that the get-together was actually to create an awareness of a bigger event he is hosting. To that effect, he spoke briefly to his fans that gathered and they went around the University premises to share an invitation flyer with other students, inviting them for this upcoming program.

While they went about, I immediately siezed the opportunity to speak with him, ask him some of the questions I had in mind about musical dynamics and also about his Instagram page which really started getting lots of followers recently. He was kind enough to give me some tips. And lastly I got to play his guitar!! Yeah!! And I tell you, it felt exactly like I thought it would. Far softer to play than mine, the sound of his strings were more beautiful than mine. Well, that's because his guitar is a professional acoustic electro-acoustic, and you guessed it right! Super expensive!! Even the strings he uses are expensive "Elixir Strings" very expensive as well, especially in this part of our country where it can only be imported from oversees.

I saw a blue guitar lying by the corner, I think it belonged to one of his friends, so I picked up and played one of the songs he posted online. He smiled and immediately accompanied me with his beautiful brown guitar. Few persons around started singing to the melody we were creating. I recall someone even rapped to the flow. 😁

Not long, those who went to share the flyers were already back. Dadotman introduced me to some of his close collaborators and I also introduced my self to them. He kinda hyped up my portfolio before them as though I was some celebrity 😎. Well I enjoyed the feeling though.

It was time for what we call "Item 7" it simply means time for refreshments 😁. Some of the girls there helped to prepare some bread toast and smoothy drink for everyone.

Fast-forward to the punch line of the story 😉

As we ate and drank, a Spanish popular progression that I listened to previously popped up in my mind. So I asked one of the girls that sang so well earlier to sing a bit of freestyle while I play this Spanish progression.

I picked up Dadotman's beautiful brown guitar and played the progression. People's attention were drawn to where we were and they gathered and were cheering her up.
Suddenly another guy joined in the freestyle and he was good. The audience also liked his flow.
At that point, I suggested that they should take turns, that means they should sing one after the other. So the guy went first and the girl followed.
Although they were freestyling, it was as though they were having conversation or rather dialogue.

It became even more interesting because the guy tried to be flirty and romantic in his words, but unfortunately the girl wasn't having it. It became like a those kind of rap battles we see in the movies, but in this case I would say a song battle.

So below I will write down the conversation they were having in that freestyle/song face-off as much as I could hear because the audience were quite loud.
I would advice the use of a headphone while watching the video for a better experience.

First the boy goes with a deep baritone voice

The audience were still cheering him while the girl quickly intercepts and blew his bubbles. She goes..

don't you call me baby....

Hey dont rap while I'm talking
You ain't got it in you..
move away.....

Oh my! She's rude though 😁😂
So the boy goes again..

Do not tell me to go away....
Béa, am just trying to get to know you... I wanna take you everywhere yeah.. I wanna take you Milano...

And while the audience was still going rowdy the girl was already laughing and was like I don't want to go to Milano!! and they all laughed.... Video ends. Well I think the girl making the video couldn't control the laughter. She was already laughing so hard.

Well, later, other host of freestyles happened. We had very serious fun and exchanged contacts for future purposes.
