I enjoyed living in Tiranë, Albania, for around 4 months, and I must say it's perfect for exploring abandoned buildings.
Albania has a very troubled past, but its history also given the country and its people much character.
The Albanian people are full of amazing life stories. The country was closed to the world for 4 decades under the rule of Enver Hoxha, and his rule had an impact on the country that is very present still to this day.
One of the most prominent memories of Hoxha's rule is the abandoned "Piramida" right in the heart of downtown Tiranë.
Although not built during his rule, the Piramida was opened as the "Enver Hoxha Museum" a few years after his death to honor the former ruler.
It quickly fell into disuse in 1991 after the fall of communism in Albania. Some locals told me the Piramida was used by the UN briefly during the Kosovo War as well.
I read on the internet that the Piramida is currently partially used by a television broadcasting company, but when I lived there the place was totally abandoned and empty inside.
The Piramida is now used by locals for the panoramic view of the capital it provides and as a safe place to smoke marijuana where the police can't get to you quickly.
The younger Albanians love the adrenaline rush the climb up and down provides, and often come in the early evening to have some fun with friends.
Albania is a truly mysterious place, and Tiranë is still my favorite capital city in the world. It is cheap, and there is so much to do on foot that you will never get bored.
Thanks for watching.
