When looking to be defensive, MYCELIC INFANTRY is one of those monsters to deploy for such a service due to the Shield ability it has. It is not the fastest of monsters in the game but makes up for the slowness by being tough to break down.
It gains extra melee damage from level 3, and from level 5 it becomes a Giant Killer with Enrage ability at max level. One thing you don't want is that Giant Killer ability coming at you. I have seen it happen a couple of times, it is not nice being at the receiving end.
The Regular Foil is selling for $0.13 and the Gold Foil at $2.

Now that I am reviewing the battle as I write, could I have prevented the loss of a monster by placing AGOR LONGTAIL at the backline? Since it can attack with magic, the backline would have prevented it from the Thorns damage it gets from attacking.
It is a strategy worth trying should I get the opportunity again.
So AGOR led my frontline line rich in Armor, Health, and attack.
MYCELIC INFANTRY, these guys lack intelligence, and they slow but provide defensive toughness against melee and rang attacks with weakness to magic. It takes up the second spot in my lineup.
Being a Briar Patch ruleset, I deployed a park-the-bus strategy, only my monsters in the frontline should attack, so ROBO-DRAGON KNIGHT in the third spot full of Armor and Health is great for a ruleset of this kind.
With DISINTEGRATOR in fourth place, I was able to reduce the melee attack of my opponent twice through the Demoralize ability of DISINTEGRATOR and the -1 melee on opponent monsters by summoner CAMILA SUNGAZER.
This is a battle that might go over 20 rounds for fatigue to set in having FLESH GOLEM in the line could survive if we do get to fatigue or even if Sneak monsters attack my backline.
VENATOR KINJO was an added monster to the line since I deployed the bus parking strategy, it was a similar strategy by my opponent as well since the rule set has forced us to be mindful of the Thorn's damage.
