Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from a small coastal village in the Garden Route about 7 hours from Cape Town in South Africa! It is beautiful here so I thought I would sing my song outside while my baby daughter naps (again)!

Welcome to Week 193 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge. The theme for this week is “Yeshua”! Apparently this is the Hebrew name for Jesus.

For those of you who don’t know, I’ve decided to alter my Three Tune Tuesday posts to be based around the Hive Open Mic theme of the week, and how I would go about tackling it. If you are wanting to take part this week, but need some help interpreting what kind of songs would suit the theme, please go check out my post here:

In that post, I tried to pick three songs that mention Jesus, without being Traditional Hymns, as I expect a lot of people will be choosing Traditional Hymns and I like to be a little diffferent:

    • “Jesus Take the Wheel” by Carrie Underwood
    • “Jesus Don’t Want Me for a Sunbeam” by The Vaselines (Famously covered by Nirvana)
    • “Personal Jesus” by Depeche Mode (Famously covered by Johnny Cash)

Of those three, let me try and tackle “Jesus Doesn’t Want Me for a Sunbeam”. This is an interesting song originally by the Vaselines, but almost everyone has probably only heard the Nirvana cover during Nirvana’s 1993 MTV Unplugged concert.

The song is a parody of a Children’s hymn. My three main interpretations from the song are:

    1. The singer does not think he fits the mould of a good Christian
    2. The singer does not think we should take on the guilt that Christianity puts on us – that man is inherently evil, and that Jesus died for our sins before we were even born…
    3. Nobody else can ever do what Jesus did – often I find myself trying to “rescue” people before they’re ever ready to take my advice… but you can’t save people, they have to save themselves while you merely offer support.

What do you take away from the song? Here’s the Nirvana performance to help!…

Lyrics for “Jesus Doesn’t Want Me for a Sunbeam” by The Vaselines / Nirvana

Jesus don't want me for a sunbeam,
Cause sunbeams are not made like me,
And don't expect me to cry,
For all the reasons you had to die,
Don't ever ask your love of me.

    Don't expect me to lie,
    Don't expect me to cry,
Don't expect me to die for thee.

    • “Jesús Take the Wheel” de Carrie Underwood
    • “Jesus Don’t Want Me for a Sunbeam” de The Vaselines (famosa versión de Nirvana)
    • “Personal Jesus” de Depeche Mode (famosa versión de Johnny Cash)

De esos tres, permítanme intentar abordar “Jesus Don’t Want Me for a Sunbeam”.
