Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town South Africa!

This is Week 142 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge, and the theme for the week is “Nuestro Destino” or "Our Destiny”. This was a challenging one for me, but I eventually remembered the song “Highwayman”. In it, a soul basically re-incarnates through four different lives, and I remember listening to it and wondering if it was always the soul’s destiny to go through the human lives it did and land up in the future life described in the final verse, or if this was all because of the actions of the previous lives. I think the song is supposed to be about how our spirits are all connected!

“Highwayman” was originally released by Jimmy Webb in 1977, but the version I know is by the Country Supergroup “The Highwaymen”. This Supergroup included the very famous Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash himself. Their version of the song was released in 1985, and stayed at number 1 on the Hot Country Songs Billboard Chart for 20 weeks, and this earned the original writer, Jimmy Webb, the Grammy Award for the Best Country Song in 1986. So I hope you enjoy it!

Here is the version I know by the Country Supergroup: “The Highwaymen”:

By the way, I am doing a weekly post on Thursdays where I ask for cover song requests in the comments, and then if I attempt your song in the following week's post, you become a beneficary to 50% of the post's rewards in HP. If that sounds interesting, please think of a song you would like me to try and look out for my post on Thursday?

Lyrics for “Highwayman” by Jimmy Webb, popularised by “The Highwaymen”

    [Willie Nelson:]
    I was a highwayman
Along the coach roads I did ride
With sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five
    But I am still alive

    [Kris Kristofferson:]
    I was a sailor
I was born upon the tide
And with the sea I did abide
I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico
I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow
And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed
    But I am living still

    [Waylon Jennings:]
    I was a dam builder
Across the river deep and wide
Where steel and water did collide
A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado
I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound
    But I am still around
I'll always be around, and around and around and around and around...

    [Johnny Cash:]
    I'll fly a starship
    Across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
    But I will remain
And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again...

    [Willie Nelson:]
    I was a highwayman
Along the coach roads I did ride

Y volveré otra vez, y otra vez y otra vez y otra vez...
