Is Serpa the most beautiful city in Portugal? of course not! is it worth a visit? of course! because? In reality there are many reasons to make a mandatory stop in the city of Serpa, firstly I think that being in the south of the Alentejo makes its climate highly sought after by Nordic tourists! In summer you can see many people walking through its narrow alleys admiring the medieval architecture, outside the city Serpa has very extensive roads with little traffic which allows you to ride a bicycle for kilometers and kilometers!🚩🧭🙇‍♂️

    Medieval defenses🙇‍♂️🚩/ Defensas medievales🌏😍🚙

That's right, these walls have more than 500 years of history that were built in the 1500th century as protection against the Arabs and later the Spanish, so you have an idea of how strategic the position of Serpa was in the history of the country, the border of Spain is less than 50km from the city, therefore for centuries it was important to protect the spaces because it was an excellent strategic point of conquest by the enemies of Portugal, for years archaeologists have discovered many war artifacts within the walls which indicates that There were many wars in Serpa.🧭🚩👨‍🏫

    Wall opening mechanism🚙🙇‍♂️

I have never seen the mechanism that was used to open the enormous entrance door to the castle in such good condition and here you see in the photo more or less how it worked, it was like a wooden pulley system, this mechanism is more than 600 years old. reinforced in the 16th century and today it is 100% original, in the other photo you can see the wall as it passes between the houses!👀🧭

I will not dedicate much information about the Serpa castle because this beautiful structure deserves an exclusive post for it since it has some curious facts such as the wall but to give you an idea it is small and is positioned to give the warriors a 360 degree view, Inside there is a museum with things found inside the castle!🏰🏰

    The aqueduct🙇‍♂️🚩/ El acueducto🌏😍🚙

I can't find any information about the aquaduct. It was probably built along with the wall, so I would say that it belongs more to the medieval than Romanesque era. I would say that it dates back to the 16th century. It was integrated into the wall and supplied water within the city. Previously, there were no houses. On the outskirts of the castle only those who were dedicated to agriculture, when there was a warning of war everyone entered inside the walls and closed the doors! the walls were destroyed several times.🏰👨‍🏫
