Against Newcastle by @southgamer on 3Speak
In the first leg of the league, this team was quite stubborn about giving me the point, so this time, it was a chance to prove something different for a change. I brought my A-game, and I had to de...

St. Well, what a sight this is, a beautiful evening and the promise of a match that will really get the juices flowing. I'm Peter Drury, and I'm joined in the commentary box by the familiar figure of Jim Beglin. Thanks for that, Peter, and may I say a big hello to everyone. Well, it looks like a big game, sounds like a big game, everyone involved is absolutely up for it. Things already rolling. This is one of today's standout fixtures between teams who are meeting for the second time this season. Aimed at the far side. And the keeper beats it away. Oh, he's been caught napping. They've got to make this nice and quick. Oh, delightful ball. He's on it. Can he get away? Rabio finds himself in the starting lineup. Jim, what would you say are his most notable qualities? He'll cover every blade of grass out there, Peter, twice probably. This guy just doesn't stop running, and sometimes when you look at him... Getting up there! And it's come back out to him! Of course! And he's only too grateful to capitalize on the keeper's misfortune. Oh, he was definitely fully focused on that, Peter. His reaction and anticipation got him there when everyone else was spectating. Chelsea penetrate first. It is a truly precious lead. So far, so good, Peter, but they need to start thinking of the next one. Now, take this momentum and force the issue even more. Now, can they get him away? Pope claims comfortable. tries to pass it through. That's been cut out, well played. He certainly caught him there, it's a free kick. He knew what was coming, that's a yellow card. Newcastle have quite a reputation for being combative, confrontational, just in your face, Jim. It's well rehearsed, Peter. It's testament to their excellent work ethic, really. The way they always go chasing the ball in numbers and they can keep it up late into a game too. Strokes it back. Osula, pitches it off him. And here's Agahawa. Shut a goal! Trice and they are soaring. One sweeping move executed with deadly efficiency. Look, if you want to be effective on the break, then the key element is always pace. That's what really rips the fences apart, and it's difficult to find an answer to it when it's applied like that. Chelsea are sitting pretty. 2-0 up. Well, now's the time you can afford to be... more daring, Peter. It may be tempting to sit on this, but I'd say go grab a third. The most accurate pass. Bruno Gimaresh, Caicedo. And they're back on the ball again. It's Camavinger. Can he get on the end of this? Rabio. That's going all the way through to the keeper. Now it's Rabiu, he's a sharp little ball here. Murphy calmly anticipates Tiao, Bruno Gamaresh. Oh no, that was never going to make it. Kamovinga, can he get it through? Bruno Gemaresh, Willock, and Tiao tries to play it through, he's got away, and the shots! And he couldn't finish. It's very good running that. You're always going to have chances with that kind of movement. Bruno Camaresh. Chow. Willock. Bruno Camarish. Chow. And it's Willock. Akhani, promptly onto that, and that is that. That's Agahua. Bruno Gimerich does really well there. He is strong. Griffrey's given a throw. Simeone making good progress. Driven in. Keeper has taken decisive action. Half-time coming up, and little doubt as to which of the two sides is the happier. And there's green grass ahead of him. Quick thinking by the keep, he did well. Osula. He is sporting a guilty look after that. His teammates are really annoyed with that, you know, and they have every right to be. Back in once more. That's just playing it safe and simple. Agahawa. and a chance! That caused a fair bit of alarm. Oh, the technical control was exquisite. The palm of the ten is exasperating. No, again there's no way through. Oh, he's having a go! That's close, and that will be the last of it. It's half-time. A thrilling end to the half there, one that very nearly changed the complexion of this game completely. How do you look back on the first 45 minutes? Well, I think things have worked out pretty well so far, Peter. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, so I think the manager has to resist change at this stage. Chelsea are heading into the break, very happy with how it's gone so far. Ah, now some movement on the bench, and we are going to see a change. Yeah, there's going to be a significant change of approach, I think. They really are shaking up their attack now. Back on the way, then. Now it's Yamal. Burn. That's a risky ball, you've got to say. Chelsea, different to some extent this half. Details of the changes to come soon. Well, I think this is probably a good time, Peter, to make ambitious change. Rabio, now it's Agahawa, threads one in, well measured, and he was quick to react. Rabio wins the duel this time, and this is Messy! And Messi! Good run, lovely take, but that is where it stops. That's really well played. It's just the type of run you need, off the shoulder of the last defender, stay on side. Chow, Willock. Oh, he's called in there, it's a free kick. At its whole, lovely pass, but can he get there? Pings in across. There's much frustration as to the lack of a touch to finish that off. Rabio. Let's Agahawa. And that has put play to that. No, not quite on the same wavelength. Not the most convincing of passes. Oh, terrible mistake! Can he finish! Oh no, this does not look good! He's having a shot! Oh, terrific save from the keeper! Agahela is offering a right smile there. Size really matters, and it's time to make it matter now. Alexander Arnold plays it short, Messi. Newcastle looking to go forward now. Cute ball, now how can he reach it? He's had it taken off him. Now that looks a decent ball. Skims one in. Pass somewhat off target. Agahawa, looking to shake off some unwanted attention. Yeah, better communication and lots of contact seems to be the route to quieting them down there. Chelsea, perhaps contemplating their next change here. That will annoy the manager, they're making themselves too predictable here. Completely clipped into space. Number three, New Miss Hall. Coming on to replace him is number nine. Jacob Murphy. Substitution in progress. Kane! Well, that was nice, but not quite the end product required. He did well there, held his run enough to ensure he didn't stray offside. Akanji. And Fernandez, nicely weighted ball. Now it's Fernandez. Byrne deals with that comfortably. Bruno Gemares, Tiao. Looking to play him in, and he's made sure that's not getting through. If they want to counter, they could do with more speed. Into the last quarter of an hour. And he plays one through. Judge, surely! Just cruising! They are cruising! With fun and fury, they continue to do their thing! It was a great finish, he put it away with great poise, dead-eye accuracy, just way, way too good detail. The keeper was never to stop. And it didn't take him long, just sitting on the bench and waiting moments ago, already he has scored. That's just as the manager would have seen it, an impact sub. Chelsea find a position of real strength now. Botman clears it away. Well, that is not the best ball, and he offers an apologetic look. Ah, he made it look a bit predictable. And this is Kane. Chelsea are coasting towards victory. Nicely shaped ball. Botman, it's not an especially good pass that. Burn. Not the most convincing of passes. Tulanga. Great vision. This is Messi. Well, it didn't look good for a while, but that was brave defending, and they got away with it. You know, it was an intervention that had to be made. Serious trouble lay in store. That is well clear. Now it's Fernandez. That is masterful defending. That is good. Super running, sharp movement came up against a defender though who was ever so determined. And the number on the board is three. Now, looking to orchestrate a counter. Paul's gone astray, looking for the run. Oh, that's well done, really robust. And that is that. Chelsea have done their thing. They were driven by a desire to maximize every game, and they have won this one.
