@theastone: Great conversation guys. I liked what you said about perfectionism verses just putting it out there. Critics whether internal or external can’t create. By doing we learn. We can’t stop planting seeds just because one doesn’t sprout. The more we plant, the greater the chance a seed becomes a tree!

@vincentnijman: I really enjoyed watching this, even listening to our talk from two years ago, as well as my screen and face freezing, at the last minute or so. It's a beautiful example of imperfection and thus in line with the theme of this chat. I enjoyed talking with you and am looking forward to Part 2 ( I guess? ) and our future convos. Keep up the good work, buddy! P.S. You failed at the spelling of filmmaker or was I perhaps a failed fil(m)maker ;^)

@drrune: Wow, the part when @vincentnijman talked about the alcoholic zombies is really powerful. I'm still watching, so I'll probably add more to this comment. Amazing talk thus far, guys!

@ai-summaries: Here is a detailed summary article about the discussion between you and Vincent: Turning Failure into Success In this conversation, you and your guest Vincent discuss the topic of failure and how you have both learned to transform it into positive growth and learning experiences. You acknowledge that between the two of you, there is no shortage of failure to reflect on, but you've found ways to use those setbacks as stepping stones to propel yourselves forward. Unfinished Film Projects and the "How to Not Make a Movie" Concept Vincent shares that when you first met, he had mentioned working on a book called "How to Not Make a Movie." This was inspired by his numerous failed attempts at completing film projects, particularly feature length films, over the years. He explains how he would get excited about a new movie idea, only to have the project fall apart prematurely due to various logistical and personnel challenges. This led him to want to document his experiences with not finishing films, as a way to process those failures. The Life of Hypersensitive Osaurus Vincent then discusses his current book project, "The Life of Hypersensitive Osaurus" a collection of 22 short stories featuring a character he originally created for an unfinished novel manuscript. He describes how this book evolved from his initial failed attempt at writing a full length novel, and how repurposing the Hypersensitive Osaurus character allowed him to turn that earlier failure into a new creative endeavor. The Struggle to Finish Creative Projects You and Vincent delve deeper into the challenges you both face in completing creative projects, whether films or books. You identify common themes, such as perfectionism, the need for feedback and validation, and the difficulty of maintaining enthusiasm and focus throughout the entire process. Vincent shares how he often reaches a point where the "energy and the fun just oozes out" of a project, leading him to move on prematurely. Lessons Learned from Failure However, you both acknowledge that these repeated failures have provided valuable lessons. Vincent realizes that his earlier film projects tended to be overly ambitious in scope, and that simpler, more focused efforts with a group of passionate collaborators may be a better path forward. You emphasize the importance of enjoying the creative process itself, rather than getting caught up in external factors like fame or approval. The Importance of Perspective Ultimately, you and Vincent discuss how shifting your perspective on failure can be transformative. Rather than seeing it as a weakness, you've learned to view it as an opportunity for growth and discovery. By embracing the lessons from their past missteps, you both express confidence in your ability to find the right circumstances and approach to finally achieve the creative successes you've been pursuing.
