Transcript

When you are hungry, your stomach is essentially eating itself. Your stomach is empty right now, but it hasn't stopped working. The stomach lining has a layer of mucus to protect itself. However, when hunger lasts for a long time, that layer begins to thin out. Now, the acid starts to eat the stomach wall itself. This is exactly the growling sound you hear. Your body releases the hormone ghrelin into your blood to scream for food. If food doesn't arrive, the body starts using stored fat and then muscles for energy. Next time your stomach growls, it is asking for help.
