Transcript

In the late 1920s, industrial tycoon Henry Ford grew tired of British monopolies controlling the global rubber supply needed for his car tires. His solution? He bought a massive tract of land deep in the Amazon jungle and built a literal American Midwestern suburb right in the middle of the tropics. He constructed neat rows of modern houses, golf courses, swimming pools and factories. He even forced Brazilian workers to eat American food and follow strict corporate shifts. The result was an unmitigated disaster. Tropical diseases wiped out the rubber trees, the workers revolted against the strict culture, and the entire city was abandoned to rot, costing forward tens of millions.
