We Don't Need PHD's In Theology by @jongolson on 3Speak
I've been heavy into the books these past few months... And I just finished my 'University of Self Education' reading plan that I spoke about a few weeks ago. While I was reading the 7 books, in 7 ...

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another podcast, Bible books and business, or Bible's books, and blockchain. There's a whole bunch of bees in my life, so that's what we're running with. And I know I've, this is, I'm actually stalling, I've been saying that I'm just going to continue with the Bible journey. I'll look through First and Second Corinthians. I haven't done one in quite a while, probably like a week and a half. And I've finished reading it, and it's interesting because my church is actually studying First and Second Corinthians starting in a couple weeks here as well. So I'm going to be very well-versed in those two books of the Bible going forward. So we will continue with that, but something stirred me this weekend. And I kind of wanted to discuss it. Actually, it's been going on longer than this weekend. It's a couple weeks now that I've really been noticing something. I wanted to talk to you guys about it. So, here we go. I read a lot. You guys know that. I read, like, 30-something books last year. I'm on pace for, like, 40 or something this year. And I like to, I like to set a reading goal. You know, it's kind of how I keep myself accountable. You know, and I really had a blast over the past month or so doing the self-education university thing. I committed to reading seven books all at the same time, and each day of the week, I would read. you know, that book. And it worked out really well. Like, it was fantastic. And a lot of the, you know, a lot of the books I read really gave me, you know, great insight. And, and I love, you know, I love theology. I love talking about God. I love, you know. studying him, I love learning everything I can. I'm definitely a sponge for information. But some of the books that I had, well, before I get into that, let me just say, if you want to set reading goals for yourself, just commit to it. Like, honest to goodness, I've noticed this, especially this weekend, because I've finished all seven books. I really kind of was not lazy, but just laxedasial. maybe is the better word. I just, I wasn't committed to reading this weekend, and I had a lot of spare time. I was active, I did a lot of stuff around the house, but I didn't have a schedule, so I wasn't like Saturday I was going to read this, Sunday I was going to read this, Friday was going to read this, I just, I've been reading this one book, and because I don't really have a set schedule, I've kind of got, you know, a little bit behind on it, I haven't been reading as much as I usually do. And I think this is going to tie into what I want to talk to you guys about. I think it's because of the topic. Now, when I was doing that seven books and seven days type thing, it was a smorgasbord of different topics. Like, I had everything from church doctrine to church history, to Christology, to prophecy, to health. I mean, I... across the board. That was kind of how it was developed. The reading plan was developed to do different topics each day and different focuses of theology. And I noticed the books that I enjoyed much more, and this isn't that I shy away from deep topics. Some of my favorite books in history have been... deep thinking books that's not just, you know, like color by number stuff, but the books that really kept me glued to the pages were not written for, like, a dissertation for someone trying to get their PhD in theology. Some of the books I read dragged on, and they were the ones I kind of finished last, because it was written, it was... academia, it was long words and complicated topics, and it just, it was not, it was informational, but it wasn't enjoyable. And this is the fundamental difference I've noticed over the past couple of months now that I've really been hammering down and trying to read a lot more. The books that are, you know, written in layman's terms that are straightforward, get to the point, actually the Bible as a whole, is written for everyday people to pick up, start reading. There's not complicated terms. If you need trouble with, you know, if you're reading like a King James or something, and you don't know what the word is, there's tons of resources online that can help you figure out the word in the old English. But generally, all of the modern translations, it's like reading books. It's like reading a novel sometimes. There's so many... translations out there that break it down for you, you know, as simple as black and white. You know, it's just, it's very, very easy to read and understand. So a lot of these books that I was reading were the same way. It was the author was writing these books. You could pick it up, you got some great points from it, but you enjoyed it. It was like a page turner, especially the history books. Like the history book I read on church history was just such a... Page Turner for me, and, you know, just, I couldn't get enough of it, I absolutely loved it. The book on Christology, and, you know, it was, a God named Desire by Ty Gibson was the book, it was just, it was amazing, it was just written for everyday people, it was beautiful, it was straightforward to the point you really got, and then there was the couple of other books, and it's the book I'm reading right now. all of the authors of these books seem to be theologians. They're all professors of divinity or something in some seminary. Oh, my goodness. It's like, some of it is just, like, watching paint dry. Like, there's just no tone, no flow to these books. And a lot of these get recommended as, you know, the go-to books for church doctrines. And I get it. You get points from it, but it's just, oh, my goodness, guys. Like, okay, let's go to the Bible for a second. And what do we see in the New Testament? I think it's either Paul, Paul or Peter says this. It's Paul, actually, I'm pretty sure. God is not the author of confusion. Like, it'll take eternity to figure out God, and that's still not enough time, but to get to know him, pretty quick. Understanding his character pretty quick. understanding his plan of salvation pretty quick. Like, children get this stuff. And I think that a lot of these theologians almost make the gospel so complicated that someone reads this stuff. And maybe, you know, everyday people are not the audience that they're looking for, but they read this stuff. And it's just like, who are you writing to? It's amazing to me. Maybe they're speaking to other theologians. Maybe they're writing these papers for students that want to... I don't even know. I do not know. But I can tell you for a fact, the books that are absolutely beautiful about the gospel, about Jesus, about the plan of salvation, they are not written for theologians. They're written for everyday people. The Bible. is written for everybody, not just a select group that know the Da Vinci Code or something like that. Like, why are we complicating this? It's, anyways, it's, it's my rant. It's my, again, because I've been reading so much recently, I've just had a whole, you know, kaleidoscope of different authors and different topics. And it's, it's not the topics that are confusing. The authors are making these topics confusing. I think we need to remember that God is not the author of confusion. And you know what? We don't need to know it all. He winks at ignorance. He gives us the light that we're going to see that we need for salvation. We don't need to know the intricacies. It's great to learn it. It's great to study it. It's fun even. But I don't know. Anyways, that's my rant, guys. Pick up a book, pick up the Bible, and just enjoy it. Enjoy it. Grab your favorite hot beverage. Sit back, kick your feet up. Enjoy time in the word. Enjoy time reading. Make it profitable. Don't get too confused about some of this stuff. If it's too confusing, just shut the book and pick up something new. That's my opinion. Anyways, what do you guys think? What's a book that... has driven you nuts. Everyone's telling you to read and, you know, I'd love to hear your comments, guys.
