@nonameslefttouse: Those water hydrants do like to freeze but one trick to help prevent the pipe from bursting is to let it drip. Can be viewed as wasting water, sure, if your water is piped in and you don't collect it. If it's pond water or something, can just throw the ice on the pond and get most of the water back in spring. And everything I just said doesn't always go according to plan. Plenty of better options, yes.
