Foraging Rose Hips by @cahlen on 3Speak

Rose Hips are widely available to forage in the Fall in many areas. They're sweet and high in Vitamin C, but be sure to remove the hairy seeds before eating. --- DONATE: CONTACT: SUBSCRIBE: GEAR LI...

Hey everyone, Cowan here, and in this video, I'm going to be harvesting some rose hips. Here's one I just picked. There's a whole patch of wild roses, I think they're called, something like that, back here behind me, and they're just little thorny bushes, and they're in the rose family, and they kind of spread by the roots, so anywhere you find one, you're probably going to find a bunch more. They also have seeds in them which you don't want to eat because they've got these little hairs which are going to get in your mouth and be pretty annoying. And people say also if you eat too many of them, it's going to be annoying to your digestive tract, okay? So you need to remove them. And basically, if it's not frozen yet this year, then they're going to be too hard to use the method that I'm going to show you. and that's pretty much where it is right now, but I'm going to show you that method. And then if it is like it is right now where they're still pretty firm, then you'll need to cut them in half and actually get rid of the seeds manually. So I'll show you that as well. But first, let's take a look at the actual rose patch here. Okay, so you can see some on the ground here. You see the spines, big juicy berries, and here's the whole patch. Going all the way back up this hill, so quite a bit. Okay, so I picked some softer ones, and we'll see how we're going to go here. Okay, so here's one side, and also this is where you picked it from, right? So this is where you're going to try and squeeze the pulp out. So basically you want to push in from four directions and try and get the pulp to come out without... bringing the seed up. That didn't work very well. You see, you can see the seeds there, but I should be able to just get the seeds off. Okay, see this section right here is where the seeds are, and this is basically all pulp, and it's really quite good. So I'm just going to throw the seeds away. So a few days ago, If I tried to do that, the seeds would have basically just stayed in the pulp rather than the pulp separating. So these are kind of halfway to where you would want them to be. I'm just going to pick around the seeds. Maybe let's try, try a couple more, see if we can get it to actually happen. So what you want is for it to actually squeeze up out of that hole. Not quite, huh? I still get quite a bit and the seeds all came out, so there's a little bit down here. But anyways, that's that strategy. Maybe I'll show you a way to ruin the season. This one is firm, and what I'm going to do is I'm going to take my knife and just cut it in half. Okay, you can see the seeds in there. Now I can just use my knife to scrape them out. Quite a bit. Okay, now the seeds are mostly gone. There's a few in there, but I'm not really that worried about it. So you can eat them like this. A lot of people like to just boil them in water, make a tea out of it, basically. But, you know, I'm actually surprised how much food is in here. you know, I thought it was more of a medicinal thing because they're extremely high in vitamin C. But these are so big, like, you could probably keep yourself fed on these. And they're going to stay on the vine and be available for you to eat even into the winter. So anyways, that's foraging wild rose hips. Hope that was useful to you, and I'll see you guys later.
