What Did historian Simon Sebag Montefiore miss about Jews in the UK in the late 90's and early 00's? by @brianoflondon on 3Speak
▶️ Watch on 3Speak --- What did Simon Sebag Montefiore miss was going on in the UK for British Jews in the late '90s to early 00's? My thoughts after his chat with Haviv Retig Gur on his Ask Haviv ...
So, Brian of London here again. Quick video, I hope. I listened to a recent episode of Ask Haviv Anything, and he was talking to Simon Seabody, Montefiore, an absolutely renowned historian. And they were discussing British Jews. And I'll jump straight to the part that got to me. Towards the end, I think about half an hour from the end. an hour and 20 minutes in or something like that. Simon talks about British Jews and the change that happened on October 7th, 2023. And he seems to, from his point of view, and I can fully understand this as a historian. You see, living through history is very different than looking back on it. And he seems to feel... that everything was going swimmingly for British Jews up until October 7. Yes, in the sort of 90s, there was some stuff in the universities, and there was Free Palestine and the Marxist thing, and the whole oppressed, oppressor dynamic started up, and the Israel's apartheid, and even the genocide stuff. Yes, that was going on. I was dimly aware of that because I was at university, sort of 89 to 92, I did an undergraduate degree, then from 93 to 97, I did a postdoc, I did a doctorate, I got a PhD. So I went through the whole university system and I knew about these, I knew about the whole Free Palestine thing, and it was growing and growing. But it wasn't really until I met and then subsequently married my Israeli wife and she came to live with me in the UK that I was more attuned to what was going on in Israel. And that happened to be around 2000 when the Second Intifada broke out. In fact, soon after I married my wife and she moved to England with me, we would go back to Israel and that was during the Second Indifada. That was at the very height of it, when we would go back for a week and a bomb would go off somewhere every single day. and these were really big bombs, suicide bombs. We would, like, not go out to restaurants because we would be worried about a bomb walking in the door and blowing up. And in fact, one of the times I was there, on the day that I left Israel, while I was at the airport, the bomb that blew up Mike's place on the beach in Tel Aviv, that was... about to be done. In fact, I got grilled leaving the country. And to this day, I feel, and in fact, it was two British, Muslim Pakistanis, that blew up Mike's place. I think one of them succeeded and died in the attack. The other one escaped and actually was found drowned in the sea. It's probable that his Hamas handlers killed him. Anyway, I got grilled at the airport. For some reason, I think they knew something British was going on. That's all to say that what was going on in Britain was not Rosie. And what Simon missed, because he really wasn't looking for it, which is what I came across. 2003, I found myself working at Associated Press, Television News in London, in Camden. And it was that experience there. What I saw in the newsrooms, because I was walking in and out of the newsroom doing a consulting project. exactly at the moment that the Second Gulf War kicked off, exactly at the moment that shock and awe and all of that stuff happened in Iraq. And that newsroom was 50%, the newsroom for the whole world was 50% Arab speaking. I won't go into details here as to why that's the case. I think it was structural, I think it was done on purpose, I think it was an absolutely, it was a targeted point of attack. by jihad to take over that newsroom, and it happened in many other newsrooms. But what I saw there was the fact that no good news about Israel would ever make it through that room. It wasn't even that they were lying at that time, or that they were telling untrudes like they do today. The filtering, and this match is exactly what Matty Friedman said from the Bureau of AP in Jerusalem. The spin was that nothing positive would ever leave. Everything about Israel would always be conflict, conflict, conflict. That's why the wider press sort of missed the whole start-up nation thing, because they were so busy only reporting conflict. And what I saw there was, because it was the Associated Press, television news, that was downstream, that was before the BBC, that was before ITN, that was before ITV and Channel 4. All of those... organizations which had their own growing inherent anti -Jewish anti-Israel biases they were being fed a diet of information that was anti-Jewish and anti-Israel and I looked around at my friends at the time in the UK and I looked at the newspapers and I saw a growing hatred of Israel being implanted in the nation The BBC is one of the most important institutions in the country, and they have been anti-Israel, I am not kidding, for 30 or 40 years, it's been on the climb. And I looked around and I looked at my friends, my non-Jewish friends, and I started to ask myself, this is 2005, six, seven. I started to ask myself, which ones of my friends were the ones who would have told the Nazis, yes, there's a Jew living next door to me. That was the, that was the, that was the, That was what was going on for me. And so I left. I decided I wouldn't bring up Jewish children in Israel, in the UK. I would bring them to Israel, and that's what my wife and I did. That was 2007 that I took the absolute decision to leave. By 2009, I was living in Israel. And you may think that's it early. But then... What also happened at the same time was I'd been studying Islam since 2001, like many people, after 9-11, I picked up a copy of the Quran, and I read it, and then I read Why I'm Not a Muslim by Ibn Warwick, modeled on, you know, I read many books, Robert Spencer's books, I met Robert Spencer, Pamela Geller, and all these people that are considered, were considered at the time to be complete pariahs. And I developed a view of Islam that has not changed dramatically. Now, my view on Muslims and living with Muslims has changed since living in Israel. But my view of the core doctrine of Islam, which Haviv knows all about and talk to that very realistically on his show. And what I noticed in this podcast with Moni Fiori was he didn't really want to say Islam. He just didn't. And the big problem for Jews in Britain, it's Islam. It is Islam. The more the country bows to Islam, the worse it will get for Jews. Now, they'll dress it up, and they come with all their free Palestine stuff, and it doesn't matter. That's just today's excuse. There will always be... an excuse for them to do what it says in the Quran, which is not, which is to hate Jews and to try to basically erase us because our continued existence disproves a lot of Islamic scripture, but, you know, they'll settle for the dimitude thing and the make us humbled and so on, and the same with the Christians. And it's as true now as it was back then, first the Saturday people, then the Sunday people. You know, I left the UK. I kept in touch with it. I met through online and so on, Tommy Robinson. I saw what he was talking about. I learned about the Islamic rape gangs, which at that time, nobody knew. Really, very, very few people. Now, very few people in intelligentsia knew, but... hundreds of thousands or millions of people across the country knew because it had happened to their daughters and their cousins and their, it had happened within their families, but these were the poor people, these were the people, the working class people, the people who were not in the broadsheets and on television. And that was, that was when, you know, Tommy exploded with the EDL because they were saying something that to this day is you've only scratched the surface of it. Rupert Lowe's report's going to come out. There's going to be very little in there that I didn't know 12 or 13 years ago that wasn't in Peter McLaughlin's book Easy Mead. But again, because Tommy was made radioactive, because the EDL was made radioactive, you were told you couldn't listen to a word that they say, you missed it, and you missed... The trend, the biggest thing that is going to render Jewish life in the UK, unturnable. Which is a pity. Anyway, I just, I had to get that off my chest. Very, very good podcast. I love Ask Aviv, anything. I disagree with him often. I agree with him often, but that's the point. I listen to things that challenge me rather than just tell me what I want to hear. So, I recommend his show tremendously. and I don't know if this will ever get to him or if this will get to Simon Cibag Montefiorei, but this is Brian of London at the beach in Hurtzlia waiting for my son to come back from a pre-army training exercise where he's going to come out looking like a sand castle and have been made absolutely exhausted and the kid asked to come to this and he would take the bus but I've decided to come and pick him up anyway, because I don't need him to spend 40 minutes on a bus when I can pick him up. Because my kid is going to go off to the army in a little while. Anyway, that's all. He's going to come looking for me. Thank you very much for your attention. This has been Brian of London. Once again, in Israel, in Herzlia. Bye.
